2005 S80 T5 Stalling

Hello, I have a 2005 S80 T5 and I took it in to the shop for problems with hard idle and sometimes stalling upon starting that happened infrequently (only about a handful of times throughout the year and generally in cold or very hot weather). They replaced the MAF and about 5 days later it stalled out upon starting but I was able to restart and drive after 10 min. only for it to stall out completely on the freeway going 60 mph.

Is there a possibility that I have a faulty MAF or does this seem like an ETM issue? My mechanic seems to think it might be the fuel pump but he isn't entirely sure.

I went ahead and split this topic from the ETM thread and moved it to the S80 forum since you may have issues that aren't necessarily related to the throttle module.

I lean towards fuel pump, you should be able to see the idle load % with Vida/Dice unit; if memory serves, it should be within 5% of 35% load when fully warmed up idling. I had mine go bad on my XC70 and it was at 42% load at idle and it would cause my car to stall out after it was hot. Try unplugging your MAF and see if you run any better before you check the fuel pump. More likely to be fuel pressure sensor than fuel pump though.

As the 2005 S80 would have a non Magnetti Marelli throttle system (it's throttle system is named an ETA and made by Bosch)
so it's a good thing this topic was split.

Quite strong pinging is a clue toward low fuel pressure. Or a reported air/fuel ratio greater than 14:1

A cheap ELM327 adapter connected to an Android device running the Torque App can provide a lot of info for low dollars.

Thanks guys! The stalling seems to happen when I've had my car parked facing downhill over night. I also noticed there is a recall on the fuel pumps for the same year and model I have but apparently I am not qualified when they ran my VIN. I'll have him check fuel pressure sensor and unplug MAF to see how it runs.

Second time the car stalled at highway speeds it triggered the check engine light reading low fuel pressure.

Or if you feel like spending $60 you could just buy a new fuel pressure sensor and install it yourself and take the gamble Before I get crucified for linking a non Bosch/Volvo sensor, it would appear based on the reviews this is in fact a reboxed Bosch/Volvo part; obviously click the MVS Amazon link to give Matthew a few $$ if you do go this route The fuel pressure sensor is a known and most common issue on the fuel system on these cars. Even a dealership would generally replace the sensor before the fuel pump. Fuel filter replacement is also a good idea, but won't cure your symptoms.

Thanks! I took it to a Volvo specialist and they said my Mass Airflow Sensor is bad, after I JUST got it replaced. He said he's getting a code on it and it's reading too low. Possibly a bad part that was installed so it's looking like I have to eat the $$$ that I just used to get it replaced, unfortunately.

He also said the Fuel Pressure Sensor needs to be replaced and as well at the Breather Box. Not entirely sure why he suggests the Breather Box. I did mention slight surging though.

Thoughts anyone?

The breather box (PCV system) can throw MAF readings out when clogged. Better to have him replace all breather box lines and clean PCV ports on engine block with compressed air and bent wire etc because these can clog.
