2000 XC-V70 Won't Start After Timing Belt Slipped

Post by DatSpool »

I just completed a headgasket on my XCV70 and the car was running completely fine and the headgasket problem was fixed. Started up multiple times. Now here's the problem I currently have. I went to start it, it fired, idled for a split second then died. Went to start again and the engine turned over without any restriction and the starter seemed to turn it over as if it had no compression.Turns out a washer got in between the crank pulley and the belt and caused the belt to slip. (NO THERE WAS NO KNOCKING/ STRANGE NOISES) Pulled the timing belt off re-aligned all the marks, turned it over by hand and now it is exceptionally easy. It doesn't seem to have any compression at all. Tried re-aligning all marks over and over again. Still won't start and still no compression. PS: The exhaust cam turns freely now and doesn't seem to have the same springyness it used to (doesnt spring back when turned and released). I feel like somethings wrong with the VVT and I have no idea how to fix it. Any ideas? ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED! Thank you guys!:)

How far did the belt slip? In other words, how far off of the marks were the camshaft sprockets when you first set the crankshaft to the mark?

Frankly, it doesn't sound good but let's do some additional steps before you yank the head again.

Only a few teeth. If I damaged something internally wouldn't I have heard it?

A few is kind of vague. Two teeth you can usually get by with but by three the damage begins. The valves bend fast and the rotational mass of the flex plate and the torque converter tend to power it right on through as it bends the valves. The car sputters and shakes but it really isn't that loud.

One thing you can try - and there really isn't any harm in doing so - is to put a teaspoon of oil into each spark plug hole and then use a compression gauge to see how much, if any, compression you have. If the car does have compression and it does start again there will be a fairly big smoke cloud after it starts up but that won't hurt anything.

Why not get a cheepo USB bore scope and look for knicks in the pistons? Compression check would be good too. I have the following borescope, i used it to check cylinders/pistons before i bothered rebuilding top end of my car at 240k.
