Aftermarket wheels on my 2005 V70...

Aftermarket wheels on my 2005 V70...

Newbie with questions....

I just purchased some aftermarket wheels for my V70. When going to install them, I noticed that there is a small bolt screwed into the face of the rotors that doesn't allow the new wheels to fit flush against the rotor. In looking at my factory wheels, there is a cavity in the back of the rim that allows this bolt to sit into it and thus the rim mounts flush. My new wheels are solid on the back side and have no place for the bolt to go. Can this bolt be removed??? I pulled one off just to expirament, and it was barely finger tight. Once I pulled it out, it didn't seem to have any negative affect. Before I pull all 4 off and install my new wheels, I want to make sure I'm not going to have problems. Thanks for the help!!

Yes, you can remove it. You might want to mark where on the hub the wheel installs so when you rotate you go back to the same place. This is a more precise way to keep things balanced, from what I understand.

Just remove the pin bolts.

Misha is correct. You can run without the bolts. The bolts main purpose is to keep the alignment of the wheel bolt holes from moving on that dark rainy night when you get a puncture (isn't it always). Once a wheel is in place, the rotor is then clamped by the wheel anyway.

The actual pin bolt is not there just for wheel bolt allignment.It's there to stick the rotor to a hub.

I agree misha, but as the brake caliper and pads are holding the rotor in place the bolt has little value other than preventing the rotor and hub rotating relative to each other. For the folks (and the Volvo hand book) that thinks it is important to mark the position of the wheel rim and hub when you remove the wheel to ensure correct balancing on refitting, then it is only of use on the old rims that used the hollow for the locating pin. I put the bolts in only as I'm particular, but they can be a pain as they can rust in and then the head snaps off when you try to remove them. The worst example and argument not to use the bolt is that one of the rear rotors actually rusted to the hub. If the bolt isn't there, then when you remove a wheel, there is a chance the rotor may not have rusted on.

However, either way I prefer to use the bolt, but in this case I take the word of my local Volvo service foreman who has worked on Volvos for 40+ years, it is he who said the bolt was to prevent the rotor and hub misalignment when trying to remount a wheel.

That little pin makes it a lot easier to install a steel rim. Steels rims have a hole for that pin and once that is lined up and the rim is suspended by it you can slide the rest of it in. Aluminum rims will have a cavity for the pin. Yes, you can remove it, but make sure everything is lined up before you mount the tire and you'll be ok.

I wouldn't drill any holes. I would just remove the bolt from each wheel.
