Can somebody please provide me the exact location of the Engine Coolant temp sensor on my 2002 S80. My cooling fan run's constantly after the engine is shut down until the battery is dead if I don't disconnect it. I see the termostat housing, but cannot find the coolant temp sensor.
My S80 has 70K miles.
Thanks,
Bob.

Obviously the designers didn't expect it to go wrong. Do they ever?

This sensor is in the thermostat housing which is behind the timing gears cover. The cover has to be removed to gain access. This typically results in breaking off the plastic nipple that the coolant overflow/expansion tank hose connects to. In that case, best bet is to replace the whole thermostat housing with an original Volvo part that also includes a new coolant temp sensor (your original problem) as well as a fresh nipple and, bonus, a new thermostat. Available for around $100 online. You can also buy a new sensor and a replacement (aftermarket) metal nipple although experience with that nipple aren't always positive (fit, sturdiness) despite it being a logical idea.
