Hey everybody. New guy to Volvo here. I purchased a 2000 S80 with blown head gasket. Started working on it this morning. There is coolant in No. 4 cylinder.
I've removed all valve cover bolts except the star bolts. Do I have to remove them to get the cover off? I'm not sure it there holding the cams in place. Is there a preferred method for removing cover or should I just pry it off? I don't want to bend or break anything. Thanks for the help. This is a great site.

Hi,
Have a look at this:

You probably don't want to do any more disassembly without following the process and knowing how it all hangs together.
I'd search the forum for "cylinder head removal" or something similar.
Cheers

Thanks. Yes, I've been looking through the forum. Saw something that said the cams are held in by the valve cover so I'm not sure if those star bolts should be removed.

The "star bolts" are torx bolts that hold in the adjusting shims for the tappets. Don't disturb them.
The 46 10mm bolts will separate the two halves and expose the head bolts.
Prying, hitting with a hammer on the prying lugs and mostly cursing will get it off.
