2002 S60 Rusty rear door quarterlight pillar

Post by RichCrewe »

I've discovered that the strip of metal that separates the quarter-light from the moving glass on the rear door has been rusting away under the rubber trim (see photos on google Has anyone else encountered this. I know it's a 13 year old car, but it seems an unusual place to rust.

I feel I should pull back the rubber trim scrub the rust away and treat the metal before this gets too much worse. Is the trim just glued on to the metal? If it is I can probably carefully part it from the metal, treat the rust then glue it back down.

Is this rusty metal part removable? I'd like to be able to repair it if the rust runs down inside the door.

TIA,

Rich

That is bad luck as Volvos don't normally rust too bad. Has the car been repaired at some time?

Don't know if the part can be removed or not. Try looking up the parts on a Volvo dealer parts web-site and perhaps there will be enough info so you can figure out what is removable.

If all else fails, try a good body-shop or the dealer to see if they can advise.

I've never seen that ... at all!
What it looks like to me is that door skin was replaced and that skin was not primered or possibly even not painted!!!
If you plan to keep it, that door needs to be replaced, it will literally come apart

Just as above, perhaps the door was repaired or some Volvo factory worker was texting.

Indeed, the easiest is to replace the whole door. With a helper, it's a 30 minutes job + adjusting the lock hinge. Unfortunately, that is not an frequent color.

Don't think the car's had an body repair in the past. I was wondering if that part of the door relies heavily on the rubber trim for barrier type corrosion protection and it's been lifted by something in a hedge catching it in a narrow country lane.

I've had a look at some parts documentation and that pillar supplied with the glass and is bolted to the door at the bottom. I've got a part no (30674363) I'll have to take the door card off and have a look when the weather's better.

Doors appear to be 40 GBP on E-bay.

Good find, hopefully it's easy to remove the bottom bolt from behind the door panel
