Lee was correct, the woodblock was a temporary fix and the problem came back within 100 miles. I replaced the ABS module with a 8622093 with the outpressed connector block (Matt @MidWestABSclaims this module never fails) and yet the problem persists.
Going through the service records I learned that the ETM was replaced with a Xemodex unit 30,000 miles ago, and then was warrantied approximately 5,000 miles ago when the problem started to occur. The ETM was replaced and made no difference to the problem.
I'm going to try a new ECU on Monday and see if that changes anything.
Also of note, the handle for the ABS computer plug is missing, I'm going to try and source one from a junkyard on Monday as well.

You do know that you can't just grab another ECU out of another car and have it work don't you? The identity of the car and the immobilizer codes are programmed into the ECU and it all has to match or it will never start.
The best deal I could find on a cloning service was ARD Tuning. Xemodex also does it but it is quite a bit more expensive, particularly when you pay the $75.00 shipping and handling charge on top of the service charge.
When the module gets cloned all of the hard coded data is copied from one module to the other.
With regard to the ABS module, if the hood is broken then the ZIF socket retainer levers aren't working correctly either and the connector will never seat properly. That is likely why you continue to have ABS related problems. The bummer with the hood breaking off is that it typically breaks the pivot pins on the connector side rather than the hood itself being broken. I have managed to use a small screwdriver to deploy the ZIF retainer levers and get the plug to seat and then I used a dab of RTV to just glue the hood on to keep water out if the connector.

I am well aware that you can't just swap the ECU, luckily I have the ability to clone ECUs. Power it up on the bench in bootloader mode, connect via RS-232 and read the code of the ECU be cloned, then write it to the new ECU.
Hopefully I can salvage the current ABS connector body, I could swap the connector pins into a new body, but I'm not sure if I have a set of Bosch terminal release tools that will work.

Have you replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch yet?

Can you elaborate on your setup?tightmopedman9 wrote:I am well aware that you can't just swap the ECU, luckily I have the ability to clone ECUs. Power it up on the bench in bootloader mode, connect via RS-232 and read the code of the ECU be cloned, then write it to the new ECU.
While researching my problems I came across a number of either very inexpensive or freeware programs that would let you play with the mapping but I couldn't tell if they could get to the other hard coded data. If could post up some more information on your setup it would be potentially be really helpful to the community.
Any descriptions of the bench setup and pins or circuit board locations where you tap the data would be killer.

You'll need to power the ECU on the bench via a 12V supply, I've been using a 3amp supply without issue, but I assume you could use as little as 1amp with success.
You need a genuine FT232RL chip VAG-COM cabl; connect pin 7 of the cable to the K-line of a ME7 ECU, pin B22.
You'll need to apply power to 2 pins, B11 and B38 and ground to 1 pin, A53.
Then, while turning on the ECU, ground pin 22 of the EEPROM chip through a 100Ω resistor, this will make the ECU enter bootloader mode.
You can now communicate with the ECU via ARGdub's ME7EEPROM tool which can found on nefariousmotorsports.com. You'll need the latest version, v1.40.
Read the EEPROM as a 95p08 and make sure you select the correct CSpin, usually P8.2, but this pin sometimes changes location based on ECU year.

I just got around to driving the car after I cloned the ECU a few weeks ago. Seems that the problem is gone for good now.
