I'm trying to figure out this strange rumbling that can be both felt and heard and seems to be coming from the area under the driver's (left) side feet. It doesn't happen all of the time, but only ever happens when driving off from a dead-stop. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I am turning to the left or right. If I am stopped at a traffic light facing up hill this rumbling will almost certainly occur. If I'm facing downhill or start off gently the rumbling does not occur.
It's been pretty cold outside, so I haven't done much investigating other than to confirm that the lug nuts are torqued down properly; they are. My inclination right now is some worn out suspension bushing(s).
Have any of you had similar experiences? Thoughts?
1987 245: rumbling at acceleration from dead-stop
thanks, Jeff. good thought. i hadn't considered that yet. on this car there are two motor mounts and one for the trans, right? how exactly would I know that the mount is bad? should i just be looking for cracks and dry rot?
when i have the chance i'll be looking for a lot of things. all along i've been thinking something along the line of a bad sway bar end link bushing or bad shock mount bushing.
i appreciate your suggestions. it gives me ideas of things i may not have thought of. unfortunately i feel like i'm just pulling at straws here.

I have EXACTLY the same problem with my 87 240 wagon.
It is the transmission mount--sounds like I'm going to drop the tranny a off a dead stop. I bet you get the same feeling!
My mechanic said there are "two" types of mounts for this model The one he ordered was the wrong one.
Sounds like "crap" to me. Are there, in fact, 2 types of tranny mounts?
BTW it's much better since he dropped the tranny and re-tightened, though problem not completely solved.

hey guys. i'm finally about to get into this thing.
i don't have a garage space to work in. it's pretty cold outside, but at least there's no snow on the ground right now.
i want to know, is this the mount that you're talking about? http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx? ... RootID=629
... or is there another one, maybe where the trans would sit on the cross member?
what IPD describes is pretty close to what I'm experiencing.
thanks for your help.

It's not the mount I was talking about. As far as I can work out with that one it replaces the rear bearing in the transmission.
The mount I have found to cause the shuddering is that one between the box and the cross member.

okay, after replacing the transmission mount the rumbling worsened - a lot. (i know, i put this off for quite some time!)
my suspicion is that with the new trans mount it's putting more stress on the center support bearing which was probably the source of the sound in the first place. thoughts?
also, if i'm about to replace this bearing and the rubber mount, will i need any special tools like a press to get the old bearing off the drive shaft and to put the new one on? in which case, i guess i should just take it to a shop?
thanks again, guys.

Okay. I'm posting this update for those of you searching for a similar problem in the future.
I told you that I replaced the transmission mount and rumbling worsened greatly. My next step was to check out the center support mount and bearing. The bearing installed seemed fine and I couldn't get the old one off, but I replaced the rubber bushing that goes around it and the spring.
The major culprit were the motor mounts. They were literally broken! The rumbling I was feeling was engine vibrations delivered directly to the frame. The rubber on those mounts was so swelled the oil filter was sitting on the passenger side mount making oil changes very difficult.
I'm sure now the motor is sitting about an inch higher than it was before.
I'm glad this is over.
