2008 XC90 Vibrations @ hwy speeds

Post by Masscomguru »

HI All,
My first post here. I just picked up a CPO XC90 and am having what I think are issues with the CVs. I have been back to the dealer twice and they can't recreate the issue because it only happens after driving for about 15 or 20 mins. At first I get a vibration on acceleration at around 70 mph. When it is cold, it is very slight, however, after driving for a period of 30-40 mins, the vibrations are noticeable on a slight decline and while the car is just maintaing speed from 50-80mph. At this point, if i accelerate hard, the entire car with vibrate but I do not feel it in the steering wheel. If I change lanes abruptly, the vibrations go away (as the weight of the vehicle shifts) which lead me to believe it's a CV. The dealer is claiming that this is normal operation of the all wheel drive and that all XCs have vibrations while accelerating because the drivetrain is locked. Any leads or pointers would be great. I had a bad u-joint on my previous car chew up my transfercase and I do not want to have that happen here.

Thanks!
Eric

Edit: Mileage is at 62k (it has gotten worse over the last 2k miles)

bump to the top... the issue seems to be getting worse. I am now at 67k (5k in 5 weeks) and have been back to the dealer for a third time. They have stonewalled me saying that this is a normal characteristic of all XC all-wheel drive system. Any pointers would be great.
Thanks!

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem? Vibrates over 70mph.

Get your tires checked and balanced. It could be something as simple as that

I did get this straightened out. I took it to another dealer who immediately informed me that it was the front axles. The Axles get really hot because of the proximity to the catalytic converter. They switched out the axles and the drive was like skating on ice. I am now at 143k and I have a vibration coming back which I am suspecting is the front CV joint of the propshaft. I do need to do some more investigating on this though.

This week my Front muffler fell apart. while inspecting, I noticed the front CV joint on the drive shaft has thrown grease everywhere. I just ordered the parts and while replace the joint and report back on the vibrations.
