95 850 T5 PCV system change question

Post by 2012 »

Hopefully someone can give me an educated answer to this. I need to change my crankcase vent system, and I'm aware there is a box and several hoses that need to be replaced. The kit with just the box is quite cheaper than the entire kit, so naturally I want to know, despite the recommendation to replace everything, I can just change the box and make the sure the piping is free of obstruction and in good shape?
Thanks for all your advice.

I've only done one, but in my limited experience, why not just clean out the old box instead of replacing it if that's all your going to do? Unless of course it's cracked. Not much to go wrong there.

In theory you can clean out and replace any of the items. In practice, the box (i.e. the oil trap) is usually fine with or without cleaning out, but most of the hoses are not.

If you are looking to save a few bucks then check out the threads that describe using 5/8 heater hose for the main pipe/tube. With that, some generic 5/16 vac line, and a few Volvo-branded short hoses you can do the whole thing for like $45, reusing the trap. But beware, if you get in there and the trap is brittle from 20 years of service and breaks, then you will need to wait until you can source another.

I have done the PCV job at least 8 times. Don't ask why!!! Anyway, my opinion would be to change the box. The hoses are very easy to clean unless you have a turbo. On the turbo there is a plastic pipe that gets very brittle and will literally fall apart in your hands when you remove it.
