Coil Springs

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Coil Springs

Post by guitar1 »

2001 Volvo S80 2.9
202,000 miles

My mechanic said I need new struts and mounts. Not sure if I have the original struts but me research says he is correct that new struts will improve handling and steering control. He recommends new coil springs though he said this more about ride height. I don't think the front is sagging and there do not seem to be coil spring issues. Thanks for advice on whether I should replace the coil springs. :D

Replace front springs when broken is the general rule.

So far owned about 9 Volvos and have never replaced a front spring. Rears tend to be more of a sagging problem due to overload.

Of course if right is lower than left or vice versa it's best to replace with a new pair.

Springs likely not necessary. Some parts suppliers sell complete strut-and-spring units, this is quicker to install. Be careful about the type of struts you select: if you want a firm ride with super handling, get the Bilstein heavy-duty struts (same type shocks in the rear; bit costly). If you like the original more soft ride, get the original spec Sachs (touring?). I got the Bilsteins and on our regular long-distance trip to and from our second home in France on small twisty roads they really hug the road. Speedbumps and less fun.
