Check all spark plugs, they may give you some food for thoughts.

update: now have 2,000 miles with no sputter. yesterday went into limp mode again (for second time). shut it off a started back up and runs fine.

must be a sensor telling the computer that something is not right and keeping the motor from damage, that resets. no engine light or codes.

take it the dealer?

You need to scan the car with a VIDA DICE unit to see the stored codes, the car WILL have them

"tac module performance" is the code that came up on my OBD II this morning at startup.

bad news is it did it again this morning at start up and retrieved this code. good news is the temp is -16f and the car started. This may be exterior temperature related as it seems to go to "reduced engine performance" in cold temps.

I'll take it into the volvo shop for the diagnostic.
