Re: 98 v70 base manual transmission question
I dropped the manual trans on my MY96 850 and it took me and a friend two full sundays (most of it was dropping, only 5-6 hours for reassembly. Once you know the way..). We were both good with a wrench and he had some hobby-mechanic experience, I was a complete newbie to cars. Haynes manual helped. Also we worked in an old barn, with 2 jacks (and you cant do with less! needed to support engine and transmission), lots of wood and chains to support various parts and good general tools.

Ok, I'm going to bite the bullet and repair this transmission with the guidance of an experienced mechanic. I need some advice on all the bits and pieces I'm going to need to do this.
My list so far,
Used manual m56 transmission
Sachs clutch kit from fcp
Axle seals
Transmission fluid and other fluids.
Anything I'm missing? Gaskets etc...
Optional fixes while the engine is out
Engine mounts
New torque bushings
Anything else to consider?

I stuck a new rear main seal in while the transmission was out on mine. It is fairly cheap and all of the labor, short of zipping off the flywheel, is already done. My RMS wasn't leaking but it had 235k on it at the time and I figured its days were likely numbered.Danpaco wrote:Anything else to consider?

Dan..I would think about replacing the release bearing while you are in there. The hydraulic part is actually inside the bell housing on these cars.Danpaco wrote:Ok, I'm going to bite the bullet and repair this transmission with the guidance of an experienced mechanic. You might consider having the flywheel resurfaced, but mostly they don't need it. Get your mechanic friend's opinion. If it is basically smooth, leave well enough alone.
I also would not opt for replacing the transmission oil if you can save and filter the stuff (I'd run it through a paper coffee filter) that comes out of your trans and especially if you are on a tight budget. The filter will not, I predict, pick up much of anything and the Volvo trans oil is, as the phrase goes "stupid expensive." The old stuff will also look brand new when it comes out.
Rear main seal and release bearing are both, as has been said, no brainers.

Transmission input seal would be a bear to replace if it starts leaking after you do all this. It's the seal just behind the clutch on the transmission. It's a rare failure but worth the $20 seal once it's apart.

A frugal man after my heart. I put Valvoline synthetic into my M56 last year, which was1/3 the cost of Volvo manual trans oil. Working great even at -15F this winter.E Showell wrote:You might consider having the flywheel resurfaced, but mostly they don't need it. Get your mechanic friend's opinion. Don't waste a coffee filter if you can steal TP from work on a weekend though. Check with your tax attorney to see if the trip in on a weekend is tax deductible.

Another week of prolonged 0 to -15F weather and no detectable difference with the branded synthetic Manual transmission oil. I would skip the expensive Volvo stuff.
