2000 Volvo S80 We can't get the oil filter out

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 Volvo S80 We can't get the oil filter out

Post by dannyt96 »

The oil filter doesn't want to come out. We've tried pliers and many other tools. It will not come out, it's like it's been melted or glued on or something. We need to change the oil filter because we just got this car and well the person who owned it didn't take too good of care of it. We also would like to know how to put on a new headlamp. It wouldn't fit in. We even losened the bumper and almost got it in but we just couldn't get the rest of it in.

I would order a new housing...not too expensive
I've had filter elements collapse, but never get welded in

then rip the old one out (in pieces if necessary) to try to discern what happened

Also, if you have the skid plate installed, take it out when it's hot
I attributed my collapsed filter element to excess heat...removed the skid plate in summer...problem did not recur...I only use it in winter

Thanks. We took it in. The guy had a 21 mm oil wrench and had some other tool but he got it out easily. Needless to say we will be ordering that tool soon so we can do it ourselves next time

misunderstood the problem

yes, use a socket to turn the housing...there is a paper element that you replace inside

don't forget to use a new o-ring...comes with the replacement element
and pay attention to which groove on the housing the o-ring sits...easy to do wrong

the housing has a torque specification on it...if no torque wrench, don't overtighten

maybe previous owner misplaced the o-ring, and then overtightened the housing.

Found a great oil cap wrench for my 2004 S80 2.5T. Made by Assenmacher - part number is V410. Inexpensive and works nicely. Aluminum build and socketed. Found it at Advanced Auto Parts for $18. Also, for the oil plug crush rings just ask your Volvo dealer - mine keeps them in bulk and just gave them to me for free.

The oil filter cap needs to be tighten enough to not unscrew itself and NO more. The oring will seal if you got the oil filter cap withing 1/4 inch of touch flange against the oil pan.
