About how much can you get when parting out an 850?

Post by Volvofan94 »

Hey MVS,

I kind of have a sad question, not about my turbo, but an 850 in general. About how much could I get if I were to part out a non-turbo 1995 850 GLT wagon (~200k miles)?

I have an opportunity to buy this car, which I've helped work on a lot, and try to part it out to help 850 owners restore their vehicles. The car is fully loaded; has every option except for the Turbo engine and rear heated seats.

Thank you!

you can see some part out activity on the PARTS Forum, where people have kept their threads live as parts are sold. You can definitely make enough to buy a decent running car if you have the time to take stuff off and ship it promptly. Don't forget to add that time in though.

One other consideration: Can you store in a place where city inspectors won't see it, if that's an issue for you. In my midwest city if it looks "undriveable" it needs to be removed from the property.
You can also get a sense of the value of parts from a "upull" junk yard such as the following.

As far as the big stuff like the engine and the transmission you won't get much with 200k on them but still they should fetch at least $100.00 each. I need a turbo transmission and a guy in town has one pulled and waiting to be picked up for $100.00. He says it shifted fine but it has 250k on it and, as much work as it is to change a transmission, I'm still shopping. If he had 200k on it I would probably go ahead and buy it.

its not an easy way to make money. Get a quote for the car as scrap first, then decide if you can make enough over that to make it worth the time and dealing with a lot of people, and transactions.

Thank you guys!

I got a quote from my local pick and pull on scrapping the car. It sounded fair to me, but the vehicle has to be in a driving condition for them to pay that price though. I don't mind picking and selling parts off the car as most of these parts I've removed at one time or another working on my 850 project car. Hoping to ship within 48 hours on the smaller items; larger items will take more time of course.

I have a garage I would store the car in as parts are picked and sold.

The average junk yard payment for an 859, S70/V70 is about $400 b/c they have a larger "audience": people come and pick and pull stuff. At the end, the car goes to scrap metal place for a few hundred bucks more.
So the junk yard makes money twice: on the small pick-and-pull parts and for the body shell.

In your case, parting out a car requires a truck load of PATIENCE, sometimes it takes 2-3 years to sell all the parts. Many of these parts are simply too expensive to ship (door, hood, tailgate, engine, seats etc.).
So your "audience" for heavy parts are basically local customers.
The small little things (switches, relays, etc.): people can find them on ebay too.

So, if you have a lot of time/patience, then part the car. If not, sell it to junk yard.

Thank you everyone for the replies and advice. Turns out the car has sold and is going to a new home. Glad to see the 850 will be on the road! :D
