2004 xc70 shrut/spring assembly

Post by das1997 »

Does anyone know if I can find a complete replacement like the ones from Monroe came up with. Seems like an awesome niche. Rest remove, install new ones and done. No safety issues to deal with.

Thanks for this awesome place to learn from. You guys rock.

RockAuto.com lists one,but I never heard of the company, SenSen. $110.00 each is dirt cheap, I was tempted, but got Sachs instead. Biggest variables are what exact spring is installed and of course the overall quality of the part. If I recall, Volvo had a few different spring rates, but this part is only listed for 2003-2007 XC70, so it's not a one size fits all. Would be nice if they made a matching rear shock, but they don't.

FCP shows one from Pro Parts Sweden called a "Quick Strut" in their Youtube video:

I didn't see it in their online catalog so you may have to call them.

I replaced my struts, mounts, etc. a couple weeks ago and considered going this route, but for some reason i didn't - probably cuz I thought it would be more expensive. But after you add up the cost of the strut bearing, boot, bump, etc., the quick strut may not be a bad way to go. Let us know if you go that route, and if you do, how did it work out.

Same here, let me know if you try it. It wasn't too hard to do the replacment, but in and out with an assembly would be nice.

You can always avoid the dangerous part (compressing springs), but having a shop do it. I bought all the parts for a strut/spring replacement at my favorite online parts store, and then took them to the local pep boys. For $20 bucks they compressed the spring and assembled the struts (cheaper than a spring compressor). After that it was very easy for me to install the struts in the car.

What is dangerous in spring compression? Buy a good compressor with the safety locks and you all set. Also do not use torque wrench.

What is it with torque wrench that makes spring compressor dangerous?

I did this job on my two V70's not long ago and definitely would have gone for a full assembly if the price is right and assembled with quality parts.

That said I just replaced the CV boot only on my oldest V70, digging out the grease and putting it back in was tedious and dirty... all to save $100 over a "new" complete axle, well not quite, I got a rebuild axle for the other car and it has been vibrating so I'm hesitant to get "rebuilt" and assembled parts again, not sure what I'll get.

Hello Everyone,

In regards to the Pro Parts Quick Struts, you should see them on our site within the month. We had these specially made for us so there was a bit of a waiting period. If anyone wants me to reach out to them personally once they're in stock just shoot me a quick email at [email protected]. I'm sorry for the delay but I'm really excited to get these in.

Thanks

Jason
