2000 volvo s70 stalling on start-up, MVSOLVED immob ring
My 2000 S70, non-turbo, has 66,000. I've had an ongoing problem with starting and immediately stalling on start-up, since the car was 5 years old. Eventually it will start after 15-20 tries. It doesn't happen all of the time, which makes it hard to diagnose. Anyone else having this problem? I spray cleaned the throttle body, hoping that would solve the problem. Back in 2005 and 2006 the dealer replaced the ETM (twice under warranty) and up-graded the software, but from time to time I still have the problem. Any input would be appreciated. Joe

Just a thought here....
From what you said above, and thus only having 66K miles on it, I would starting by having a look at the engine immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition switch. These are very common failure points on these cars that will have the classic "start and immediately stall" symptom. Very easy to remove and replace and not badly priced either.
Here is a thread on it...

Again, just a place to start and see where you get.

I'm having the exact same problem and I'm very happy I found your post! The first thing that came to mind when it started happening was an immobilizer issue, but I was unfamiliar with the system on my own V70. I cleaned the throttle body first just in case, which actually helped with smoothing the idle, but didn't fix the problem. Purchasing an antenna now and I will let you know if it in fact solves my issue!

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Replacing the antenna in the steering column solved the issue completely. Thanks so much for the help! It was a relatively easy fix, and I have had no issues since.
