Trying ti ID a problem of hard starting.
Car starts fine ONLY with a full or near full gas tank. With less than 3/4 tank, car cranks excessively before starting. In New England, I risk killing the battery in cold weather by excessive (12+ cranks) on less than a near full tank.
Possible pump - gas filter problem, or something else?
Thanks!

Hi Harry,
common probs on 240s are the following:
1. the fuse in the engine bay behind the batter.. 25 amp.. gets corroded... get rid of it and put a new one in if you have not done so recently.
2. fuel relay.. always have a spare.. you can test the system by bypassing it ..but not sure what your year is.
3. fuel filter .. when was the last time you changed it
4. Have someone turn on the car to position ll while you open the gas tank filler tube and listen for the humming sound..means its working. no sound means its not working.
5. check for leaks on the other pump under the frame.
6. Make sure your fuel regulator vacuum line is connected the the throttle body.
If it isnt any of these then most likely you need to do a deeper analysis.
Good Luck!

Looks like I've got a work list.... Thanks!
Prior owner of '83 and '89 240's
Do most of the 240's have a fuse for the fuel pump in the engine bay? I didn't know about this. I've had problems twice with no power going to the fuel pump and assumed it was the fuse inside near the drivers door.
yes if you look on the drivers side fender (in north american cars anyway)
Just in front of the wheel well behind the battery when your facing the car you should see a silver box about 3 by 1 inches...this is the light relay.. directly behind it you will see a socket with a modern spade bit fuse. its pretty thin.. but i have had four seperate 240's at one time or the other had issues with this fuse.
Because its such a cheap item.. i would replace it regularly.. and get the ones with a rubber cap so moisture does not penetrate it. I would also take a thin piece of sandpaper and just clean out the contacts.
Psst .. just as a reminder you should put down the year and model of your car or atleast list it in the forum.. go you your profile and fill it in.. its easy.. add a signature.
In both these cases i could have given you specific directions as there are slight differences between the earlier and older 240's.

there is a check valve in the main fuel pump if this check valve fails you get the excessive cranking before fuel pressure builds up. I think you can buy check valve from www.fpcgroton.com
