2000 XC damage transfer case / Bevel Gear

Hello Mr. Sykes: I have a bad transfer case on my 2000 v70 xc and i am considering having someone pull the driveshaft to the rear like you did. One mechanic insists it won't work. Could you please tell me, did this eventually work out for you and what do i need to tell the mechanic so it goes OK?

Removing the prop shaft may or may not fix your problem but it is worth a try. There is no commercially available block off plate that I know of and the trick is to keep the sleeve that runs between the transmission and the transfer case in place after the case is removed. That sleeve is the seal surface for the transmission.

We have one member that used a hose clamp around the axle to retain the sleeve in place and he said it was working OK. It is my understanding that the sleeve rotates counter to the axle so it can't just be firmly secured to the axle itself and it rubbed on the hose clamp but he said there was no real bad noises from it.

Hi, i have a 1998 v70xc, I had a driveshaft noise, (it was the first cv joint on drive shaft from bevel gear to rear. Took to shop to remove shaft, (they did it for 1 hour labor $85). noise gone, I have shaft, could rebuild, but will leave as fwd. Car has 205k miles. No problem making fwd only. I miss AWD only slightly in snow.

Thank you both for the input. Is prop shaft the same as the drive shaft? One mechanic I know says he will pull the driveshaft if I sign a waiver. He estimates its a two-hour job. If he pulls the shaft and I still have the racket, it sounds like the operation is reversible?
