1997 850 NA Oil Filter Brand Preference

Post by BlackThunder »

Hi, I am going to be attempting to change my own oil for the first time on my 1997 850. I have always had a shop do this in the past but I am unable to get scheduled and I am about 1000 miles over. Also, they gave me a synthetic blend instead of Mobil 1 like I wanted them to last time so I think I better start taking over this duty.

Anyway, what brand of oil filter should I get. Something that I can get at either Advance Auto Parts or Autozone will be preferable. I don't know anyone in my area that carrieds OEM Volvo parts. I could order one online though...

I haven't purchased an oil catch pan yet, oil pan plug washer, or oil filter wrench/socket. Are there any other things I may need (beside the oil and filter)?

Also, what do I do with the old oil? Drain it into the Mobil 1 bottle? I am a complete newbie at this and I have been reading up on it an watching a couple of Youtube videos. I feel that I am ready to give this a try. I do have ramps for the car to get off the ground.

Thank you in advance.

The preferred filter brand is Mann, which I believe is OEM. You can order them from places like FCPeuro:

They also have the crush washer which you may want to replace:

Other than that, you'll need a 17mm box wrench or socket and maybe a oil filter wrench. That should be it. It's a pretty simple job on these cars.

Oh, I forgot. I take my old oil to our transfer station/ recycling center. They charge a small amount but it's the easiest and most convenient way to get rid of it for me.

I also hear that places which sell oil have to take back the old, but I never tried that.

It's important to use Mann, Volvo, or at least a Bosch filter because they have a check valve built into them to keep the oil from draining down from the upper engine overnight. They will prolong the life of the engine because most wear occurs on startup in the seconds before oil pressure builds.

A nylon-strap-type filter wrench works well because clearance issues make it hard to get a grip with some other type wrenches.

Mann,Mahle(Knecht),Bosch,Delphi,Volvo...it's up to you.
Stick with those brands, otherwise you will have hydraulic lifters ticking at cold start-up or when engine is at operating temperature.

Autozone takes the oil back for free. They just point me in the direction of the large filthy oil container. Empty antifreeze sized containers work great along with rags and box to keep the oil stable while driving to keep your car clean.

eEuroparts sells the crush washers for $0.24/washer. Buy a bunch of them for oil changes down the road.

Use an OEM quality oil filter as mentioned previously.

A spring cup style oil filter wrench may be helpful considering the location of the oil filter but a normal strap wrench is more than enough. Something like this is perfect although you'll have to check the size, the Mann filters are pretty big -> https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-63600-Oil-F ... B0002SR4Q8

I suspect most parts stores will recycle the old oil. Any quick lube place will also take them. If they ask you to pay for the recycling take it somewhere else. This should be a free service.

Great tips, everyone. Thank you. Since it is going to be summer and hot in Minnesota should I be looking at Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic? 0w-30?

I have about 178k miles on the clock.

The owners manual contains a chart with temperature vs oil weight. I've used 5w30 year round for years with no problems. My next change I'm going to try out 10-40 and see how the engine responds to that.

You should be looking at 5w-40 or 10w-40 all year round.xx-30 oil should not be used when ambient temperatures are higher than 30 degrees Celsius. It is for up to 30 degrees Celsius.
