After a difficult weekend of trying to rehab my blown turbo and then stripping the threads to the turbo return line bolt hole on the cartridge, I have to remove the turbo again to retap the buggered up hole.
My question is this: Can the oil return line be mated up to the turbo (cold side only) and then installed or do I need to install the turbo and then get under the car to attach the oil return line from below? This is how I tried to do it originally and I ended up crossthreading the bolt and wrecking the threads on the cartridge.
This would normally not be an issue as I can drive the car up on ramps and easily get underneath, but the car is on the ground and my garage is very narrow which makes it possible to only raise one side of the car with a jack and a jack stand. It is then tough for me to get under the car since the clearance is low, the car is lowered and I am large.

As it tends to be a PIA either way, especially with the AWD cars, as you have the bevel gear right in the way, I like to mount the tube to the turbo but leave the bolts a little lose so I can have a little wiggle room when I mount the turbo to the manifold, I tighten the bolts to the manifold first then do the drain tube.

I managed to get everything installed with the pipe on the turbo. I was only dealing with the intake side of the turbo as I left the exhaust side mounted to the manifold. It was a pain, but now that I have done the job, the next time will be a breeze. Removal and re-installation took about 2 hours. So far no leaks and the car seems to be running well.bskeels wrote:As it tends to be a PIA either way, especially with the AWD cars, as you have the bevel gear right in the way, I like to mount the tube to the turbo but leave the bolts a little lose so I can have a little wiggle room when I mount the turbo to the manifold, I tighten the bolts to the manifold first then do the drain tube.
