It will run more quieter, smoother and it will be happier with xx-40 oil.polskamafia mjl wrote:The owners manual contains a chart with temperature vs oil weight. I've used 5w30 year round for years with no problems. My next change I'm going to try out 10-40 and see how the engine responds to that.

I'm at 251k miles and my car burns oil through the valve stem seals. I use 10W40 to avoid that and the car ticks neither on startup nor during warm operation.
During last year's record cold winter, I did experience some noise on cold starts, which was resolved by switching to 5W30. You're in Minnesota, which is colder than Chicago, where I was at the time. If you park your car inside your igloo it'll probably be fine, but if you have a change scheduled for late fall or early winter, go for the thinner stuff.

I am in Canada, so I dont now what exactly is going on in the US but, I thought I should put my point of view.
Oil catch can is a very good buy, cause it always is convenient. I bought mine for 11$ and is actually made in canada.
Mann filter at my parts store is 6,75$.
My last buy was a 5l Liquy moly 5-30w, and 1 quart mobil 1 because they didnt have 1l moly, fully synthetic, total 38$.
I don't have a filter removal tool, but I use my a leather cloth and unscrew with my hands. Sometimes it's difficult to come off
.
I put the oil, in empty cooking oil jugs, that I get from a restaurant, they are pretty convenient since they are 20l.
There is a recycling centre, so when they fill, I take the oil there, no charge. + the filters.
Like misha said, for the summer you will need more weight on the oil.
I am doing mine tomorrow, and on average the good days of march here, have been ~ 5 degrees celsius in during daytime, so I still have time.
Good luck

You can get a case of Mann filters (10) from FCP for about $45 which brings the cost of filters to under $5/ea. Get rubber washers for the oil filler cap as well and replace at every other change. That will keep the oil in your engine as opposed to spewed all over your cam cover.
