2002 S60 instrument cluster repair

Post by rohran »

The instrument cluster on my S60 is dark on the left side. The only thing still working is the check engine light and the parking brake and the seat belt light. Car runs fine, but I can't see the tach speedo, temp gauge, or the fuel gauge. I recently swapped the whole drive train out (car was not running when I bought it, but the previous owner said there were no problems with the display). So, my concern was that I had not replaced some wiring properly. I thought about sending the display to Xemod or whatever their name is, but was worried that the problem was just wiring. So from another car.. identical year and model, I swapped everything DIM, CEM, key, and engine computer. Now, everything worked, except the engine computer was not working well with the throttle, and kept going into limp mode. Also, the odometer on the instrument cluster (DIM) was not displayed, but that was the only thing. I swapped everything back, and now it runs fine again, but the DIM doesn't work....

Looking for ideas on what I missed.

Here is some additional info: I think the ETM could be specific to the two cars. So far the electronics from each car has not worked with the others ETM.

You need the ETM from the donor car or have your ETM matched to ECM network config. No other way really.

After some extensive reading in the vadis last night, I came to that conclusion as well. It appears to be a simple addressing protocol in the CAN that needs to be changed for each unit. What about the Rear and and Upper Control Units... do I need to change them as well?

If you have a Dice/Vida setup there's a MVS member who's a wizz at performing cloning pf modules remotely over the internet. He's done about 30 ETMs and a couple of ECMs as well as a CEM for me. His username is "doublebug" and you can also find him on Skype.

Not sure what you mean by Upper Control Unit. There's a rear body module in the rear left of the vehicle which may or may not match the CEM. Do functions such as sunroof, rear locks and rear windows operate?

couldn't remember the exact name used in Vadis, but it's the module in the mirror. Today I switched everything rear, upper, engine, etm, dim and key... Now the car thinks it's the other car. Everything seems to be working. I had to clear a code in the SRS, and change a bulb in the cluster for the odometer. I don't have a DIce/Vida setup yet... need to find a reliable place to buy it.

Did you try swapping only the DIM from the other car? As long as all 4 numbers on the side are the same, it should work IF your CEM is working properly. Sometimes the CEM can mess up the DIM, so it's not always the DIM itself. As for Xemod they are too expensive. Check out Ebay DIM repair service for $150 or so, some sellers have a great feedback.

Also the DIM si very prone with bulb light issue - it will make the displays dark.

I didn't try using the DIM from one car with the other. The key on the car with the bad DIM was acting funny anyway, so I was glad to swap the lock out as well. I still have to swap the door and the trunk lock to complete the conversion. I am suspicious about the DIM anyway. The car was not running when I bought it, and the PO said the DIM was working. I think it's more likely that it was swapped with something from the junkyard and didn't work, and that's why PO dumped the car to me. The bad DIM had all of the direct connections working (park brake, check engine, and seat belt), but everything that came in over the Net was none functional, just as if somebody had replaced the DIM with an incompatible unit.
