1998 v70 2.4L Air Pump Run Duration

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

Recently i installed a new secondary air injection system pump in this car.
Before the install the OBD2 Read brought up a P0410 code, which for this car means secondary air injection system trouble.
With the OBD2 read after the install (new air pump), the secondary air injection system trouble code went away, which is good, but i dont hear the pump ever running. Even when i first start the car i dont hear it run, and it should make enough noise to hear because i tested it before installing and it makes an audible noise. Also, about 2 seconds after starting the car i check for suction at the intake hose and there is no suction and no pump running noise.

So my question is, just when is the pump supposed to run?
From what i understood previously it is supposed to run when the car is first started, but what i dont know is for how long or even if this is true all of the time no matter what the weather conditions are.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

I have a 98 V70 AWD. On this car I have yet to see a pattern for the air pump. I have heard it run at various times after start ranging from 5 minutes to an hour. As far as I'm concerned no code no problem.

The SAS pump usually runs about about 90 seconds or so in Volvo, BMW, VW etc.

However, search forum for the "90-cent diode" trick and you will never deal with this again.
Also, drill a small hole at the bottom of the defunct air pump so water is not sucked into the air filter.

For deleting the air pump:

I echo what the other posters said: The pump runs at startup for like 90 seconds, but can turn on at various other times for various durations.
