2002 Volvo S60 - Brake Pedal Position Sensor

Post by kase6000 »

I've had a mystery problem going on for the last few years.

The BCM went bad on my 02 Volvo S60 a couple years ago. I had the ABS light, traction, brake, etc show up on the dash. Took the BCM out and sent to a company to have rebuilt. I got it back, installed it, and everything was fixed except I was getting an "Engine System Service Required" message, with an amber exclamation mark and cruise control no longer worked.

I took it to the dealer and they said I needed a new "Brake Pedal Position Sensor". I purchased a new genuine Volvo sensor and installed it into the brake booster. It didn't solve the problem, nothing changed.

The dealer says that the codes are:

BCM-0103 - Pedal position sensor Faulty signal
ECM-9400 - Brake pedal sensor - Faulty signal

Their suggestion was that a software update may fix it. I haven't yet tried that. I thought that the BCM may still be bad, so I sent it back into the company that rebuilt it. They said they did another rebuild and replaced some components. After reinstalling, I still have the problem.

I have no idea what it could be. The BCM still? Maybe the new pedal position sensor was bad also? Or would a software upgrade fix it? I've searched all over the web and can't find any solution.

The reason why I think it is still the BCM is that it would be really odd that both the BCM and Pedal Sensor failed at the same time. I never had issues with the cruise control / engine system service message until the BCM first went bad.

I would give the software update a try, sometimes when you either rebuild modules or get used ones they need to be linked to the car in order to work properly, and I guess if that still doesn't fix it you can rule out being the software issue

Brake control module or ABS unit.

The 2002 plus units are programmable. You can easily see the Network Sratus of the car by using Vida/Dice and note the BCM software numbers in use.

Once you have located a used BCM just plug it into the loom and start Vida (make sure you choose Update for vehicle parameters) and compare the software numbers installed in the replacement BCM. If they match you have a compatible BCM. By sticking to the same model year for the part your chances are much better. If no match use the warranty policy or get credit at the boneyard.
