I'm planning to by a used V70 1998-2004. Any years or models I should stay away from?

There is generally a simple rule that applies to buying most Volvos: Stick to the newest model in a given model. In your case I would go with a 2004 model. Volvo has a tendancy to improve their models with time.

Agreed...the '04 is the best of the years questioned.

First time user. Thanks for the site.
I am thinking about buying a 2002 v70xc. It has 44000 and the dealer wants 18k. Seems like a good deal. Anyone have any horror stories that will convince me to try and buy a 2003-2004? The vehicle also has a 3rd row that the dealer and some sellers on the net call "very rare". Should I buy into this?

thanks

Not out of line from a dealer especially with the 3rd seat just stay away from 2001's. The are generally bad cars, 1st year car and all that

I would stay away from '02 or older XC. The '03 and newer have the new design awd system. New design because the old one was junk and expired at will.
General comment for all P2 Volvo's: Just stay away. Do yourself a favour. Don't try to impress the neighbours with a new(er) Volvo and just buy a quality Toyota product. Wish I did.
