breather system

Post by cgutta12 »

Ok i got a new breather box and i was told by volvo dealer its probably not the pcv system idk why but is there any other reason why some white smoke should be coming from the oil dipstick area and pressure coming out from top when oil cap is off? Engine only 60,000 miles

Turbo,non turbo?
Service history?
Overheated engine?
Oil in coolant or coolant in oil?
Compression test done?
At 60k miles, engine is pretty new.
If you have low ambient temperatures, white smoke should be just condensation.Oil comming from filler cap when it's removed and engine running is normal.

Non turbo regular oil changes,no over heating, no oil in coolant And no leaks to my knknowledge.and no compression test done yet. THe guy at the dealership said the hoses are kinda big to get clogged so thats why he thinks its not the breather system. Is he right?

Ok....did you cleaned flame trap?
It's white plastic disc with a lot of holes on it.They became clogged and force the oil to escape through filler cap, dipstick and if left clogged for some time....they force the oil from almost all seals.
Do you know what is flame trap and where it is?

You don't need to replace it.Clean it pretty good or just remove it and throw it away.Seriously....all of the members thrown it away since all it's doing is keeping clogging and making problems. It's located at plastic hose which goes onto throttle body.It have it's own housing and one bigger and one smaller(vacuum)hose is going onto it.
Search repair database....there must be something about it.If you can't find it,i'll post pictures of it.

Here it is:

It is hard for us to help....we have no idea what the shop did or did not do in terms of the PCV system replacement. Who knows what they forgot or screwed up. Furthermore, you need to remove the intake manifold to assess the full system's integrity accurately...but...

Most importantly, to find some answers if PCV is clog; put a hospital glove over the oil filler (with cap removed) and secure it with a rubberband so it is tight. start car: if it blows up, your system is clogged, if sucks in, the vacume is patent and you are all good. More info on other threads on this easy diagnostic method.

It's not always like that...on non turbo models, clogged flame trap can cause exactly the same symptoms like clogged pcv system.Flame trap, actually,IS the part of pcv system.
