Hey Gents, new to the forum.
I'm gearing up to fix my wife's wagon.
Got a CEL for the first time the other day.
Oil was lower then it should be.
Rough idle and smelled rich on warm start, but has done fine since.
I pulled some codes off which were generic (PO101, PO170).
I have a tentative diagnosis from the dealer of breather system failure.
I agree with the diagnosis but not the estimate ($966.00 US).
I'm going to jump in, and I have this awesome PCV walkthrough by Mike.
I have not done a lot of research by way of parts. I have heard of several kits.
Can somebody point me in the right direction in terms of favorable supplier? And/or list of parts needed?
And maybe keep tabs on me as I post -- perhaps save me from myself if I am about to do something stupid.
I have restored a 928, but never worked on this five banger.
Regards.

Any other "while you are in there" tasks that are recommended since I will have intake off?
Thanks again!

A new intake gasket is needed, while there it's a good idea to replace the thermostat housing - another $100 because it fails at 10 years. Test the lower oil port that goes inside the oil pan while the PCV box is off. A magic moment to remove and test/clean the injectors on the ultrasonic cleaner ($100 service off Ebay) and to test the various serpentine belt pulleys for smooth running.

"...I have a tentative diagnosis from the dealer of breather system failure...."
Cut the finger off of a rubber glove and attach over the end of the dipstick tube with a rubber band. (With dipstick removed) Start the engine. If it inflates, you need to do a PCV service. If it deflates, the PCV is working at least to some degree.
The hardest part of the whole job is getting a good hold on the last manifold bolt that is partially hidden by the thermostat housing. I've been wondering if it would make life easier to replace that bolt with a torx or allen head, as the problem seems to be in snaking the socket in there. I won't need to do a PCV service on either one of our cars for a while, but it would be interesting if someone tried this mod....

Access to the housing to engine body screws is hard, access to the two screws that split the housing half open are easier. It's easier to just open the housing and replace the thermostat inside. The two screws that keep the housing parts together can be replaced with regular hex head 10mm M8 I think - don't remember exactly the size, but it worked on my 2003 S60

Just did a breather box on s60 2006. I have done about five breather boxes before but never on this year. It is the most difficult. Here are some incites
- buy a 10 mm crow foot for the last bolt behind the thermostat housing.
- Detach the down hose on the tb it will then give you enough play to remove the coolant hose attached to the intake.
- you can disconnect the etm once everything is removed just turn the intake there is enough of play.
I did not remove the power steering pump or the fuel rail no need to.
- the fuel line is fairly easy, it was stumped at first but once u remove the torx screw and release the left tab you can then pull the other plastic piece on the line up. The fuel line will be free and detach once you lift the manifold
- be careful with the bolt just behind the fuel line it is difficult to seat straight be careful about cross threading.
P.S got my parts from FCPEURO. No need to get the 188 hose just when everything is off detach the secondary hoses (one connects to intake and others and clean they get clogged. Also go to the dealer and get the bolt which goes into the manifold holding the coolant line it gets pretty clogged.

Hey guys, thank you again for all the sage advice.
I really do appreciate your time.
I have a kit on the way with the gasket. I went through fcpeuro before I saw the other link.
I will look at buying a t-stat housing while I'm waiting for parts.
I did do the balloon test today, and got some positive pressure off the dipstick reservoir.
Luckily, I have metric crow's feet and some other weapons I save for close encounters!
Hey, question for the forum: when I pull and test these injectors, what's considered in spec.?
Cheers.
