No leak potential. The bolts go into, not through the roof.

I just pulled my rails from the one in my avatar. They were on there from day one. A little tear on a couple of rubber pieces, but these things last forever. Six screws in the top, where anchors are already in place and some yellow clips to help keep everything flat. I think it changes the look of the Volvo in a good way.

I would agree that installing the factory rails is the way to go. Yes there are other crossbar products that fit without rails, but they are less common and therefore usually more costly. The factory rails work great and look good. With the rails you can easily take the cross bars on and off as needed.

Just to highlight: if you or anyone decides to go factory / junkyard OEM style rack: under your existing trim, there are pre drilled holes with threads for the bolts. The bolts for the rails are a security torx, so you will have to grind down middle with a dremel, or get the correct security torx bit.

Easy as Pie! This was the first "mod" I did on my v70, long before I started crawling under the car to do oil changes even

Oh that's very interesting. That would take some of the problem away then. Do you happen to know what size bolts they are, and how many are required to bolt the thing down correctly?
I ask because i'd like to get an idea how sturdy they are once mounted. Knowing the bolt diameter and length and number of bolts will tell me about this.

Read previous post. I just took mine off my '98. It can carry a boat load of weight. No security torque on mine. I think it was a 25.

FYI, if your only freaky cargo is that 2x4, you can carry that without a roof rack. The front passenger seat folds down (I didn't know this for the first two years I owned the car) and there should be plenty of space to get them in.

If you're not really looking into it for any reason besides hauling the occasional 8-foot plank, you're already covered. A roof rack is probably nice to have, though.

Hi again,

Thanks for the idea, i'll have to check into this. Maybe leave the roof racks for another time once i get the car running properly. I have some necessary mechanical things to do first before i can start adding the 'gravy' but the roof racks sound like a very nice addition at some point.
