You may hear other opinions but for the transmission I use whatever Dexron is the cheapest and just pay attention to the service interval. Supertech (yep, Walmart brand) or whatever they have at Costco or Sam's club, usually. People who drive these cars hard like Mobil 1. You definitely can't go wrong with the Maxlife.

I went to buy some Valvoline Maxlife ATF and it now says full synthetic - I wonder how different it really is? It is on sale for about $11 a gallon there!

It looks like they might have just changed the marketing for it since:
" Here in the US, oil manufacturers are allowed to call highly-refined petroleum-based (Group III) oil a synthetic"

It is very cold here into the teens at night maybe single digits tonight and my
son got a CEL, had it tested code P0410. This is a SAS problem?
Do we do the diode mod or is there anything simple we should check first?

Is this urgent, other than not being able to see other codes? Does the ECU run
in some sort of degraded limp mode just due to SAS with the light on?

The P0410 is a SAS code and it doesn't put the car into any kind of limp mode if that is all it is. The diode trick will end it forever.

Thanks, but if it was something simple like a relay is there a procedure online to get it working again?
Is the air pump electric or is it the solenoid that it operated by the relay?

Found this, looks like the air pump is electric:

Correct, the air pump is electric. P0410 is strictly a nuisance code, won't affect operation at all.

Eight times out of ten the light comes on because the SAS valve has failed, condensation has collected in the air pump, and filled it with water so that it eventually stops working. So to fix it you need to get a new SAS valve and a new pump. Or a diode. The other two times there is a vacuum leak somewhere. Diode fixes that too.

Here is the definitive diode link over at Volvospeed, there is probably a good one here too http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/14 ... with-pics/

Pete...in your case you probably collected condensation which froze.

Next thaw might clear up,the problem and reset the code

It took about a month after the thaw but the code did clear.

Car has been running well.
Front tires are nearly bald on the outside. It had four relatively new tires when we got
it, maybe 2 years old but with probably less than 5000 miles on them and I guessed that
they got an alignment when they bought them. I think that they are from Town Fair tire
who does require an alignment IIRC.
I guess we have to check for tie rod ends, etc. before we go in for 2 new tires and an
alignment. Anything else to check while we're under there?
