So I do have an EGR valve. I just couldn't see it clearly with all the other things in the way, but I did see the temp sensor and vacuum lines going into it. So will I need to stick with an EGR engine? Is there a port on the back of the head that makes me stay with an EGR engine, or could I swap my manifolds onto a non-EGR engine?

You can swap it all back and forth with the manifolds.

Hi guys, I found an engine out of a '98 S70, it has about 160k on it. It does have the air pump set up on it.

Can I simply use my manifolds instead and retain the EGR from my engine? Everything else should be fine correct?

According to the engine serial number it takes the automatic timing belt tensioner set up like my '95 850. I should be able to swap all the new timing components and water pump over that I just installed in the 850 onto the S70 correct?

I know motor mounts are different for an 850 than the S70. Would I retain the 850 motor mounts or go with the S70 mounts?

The wrecking yard wants $250 which seems reasonable, I've been dealing with them for years.
I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions as I go, I'm hoping to get started tomorrow morning.
Thanks, Matt

Yep, it will work for sure if you keep your existing manifolds. Even the engine mounts on a 98 S70 are the same as an 850.

Don't forget to pick up another paper water pump gasket when you are gathering parts. Maybe a new throttle body gasket, take that apart and clean it up real well.

Good price especially if it is a good yard. I once had a problem with a junkyard engine, experienced a broken valve spring in the first couple hundred miles. Local yard, they refunded me for the engine even though I kept it and swapped in another head.

I did the engine swap over the weekend. I want to thank wheelsup for the great step by step tutorial. It's full of awesome pictures and great notes, it was a huge help. I had read the Haynes procedure over and over, but the tutorial from wheelsup was 100% better and more helpful. I swapped over all the new timing gear and the water pump, I installed new cam seals and rear main seal, I replaced the transmission input and both output seals, I replaced the radiator hoses. I replaced all 4 motor mounts, they looked original. I removed the exhaust manifold to get more clearance to pull the engine and found that it was starting to leak so I replaced it. I ran out of time so I still need to re-install the starter, airbox, injector rail, pcv system. The a/c compressor and p/s pump are still attached, but I still need to bolt them in place. I still have a few hours of work ahead of me but the hard part is over. I can't wait to finish it up and take it for a test drive. I am a little tires and sore, but really enjoyed doing it. I just hope it runs great when it's done.
Thank you all for the tips, support/encouragement getting this project done.
Matt

Matt..I've got an AC pump and manifold if you want to pump that down yourself....out of respect for your weekend tinker.

Bravo Zulu!

hi abscate, thanks for the offer. The AC compressor is still attached to the lines and charged, I just moved it out of the way to do the swap. I just need to reattach it and put the serp belt back on. Unfortunately I already bought and installed the exhaust manifold/header, it's a Dorman brand. It was $150 including all the gaskets, looks pretty decent and the only thing I could find locally on a Saturday.

You are re-doing the PCV system on this engine right? Unless it looks brand new, this is a weak spot on these cars that can pop the cam and rear main seals ...of course, for you, you can probably do the next engine swap in an hour...

Yes it's all brand new, I also dropped the oil pan and cleaned all passages and replaced the pick up tube seal and 2 o-rings to the pan. This engine better suck the test glove inside out when I'm done with it, lol.
