Oh man PLEASE stop going to Autozone, Pepboys or whoever else employs TMNTs (though some turtles are very knowledgeable)
You really need a Vida/Dice setup on a 99 or above to even scratch the surface of a good diagnosis. Yes costly for the initial outlay but will pay itself off after two uses. Just buy from a seller with great feedback.
The ETM system relies on afew other components to operate properly such as the brake pedal sensor (on brake booster) and a good MAF sensor. The generic code readers simply miss most of the action.

I have had success with junkyard ETM;s working with absolutely no programming needed, but i would go to great lengths to match year, motor size, etc as closely as I can. As far as scanners I prefer the ELM 327 and Torque pro, cost you $20 and can even read O2 sensor wave forms so you actually know if you need one. Like Abscate I have also wondered at the amount of money Autozone makes diagnosing every code with "you need 02 sensors and spark plugs and a catalytic converter." Tell then you only want NUMBERS, not possible causes.

thank you guys for the advice. Next step is to get a decent code reader.
My findings of the day: ohms at the temperature sensor are 1092; a local volvo guru said they should be at 1600. Also took off the plastic cover to access spark plugs and its flooded with oil, along with bits of the brittle wire bundle sheath. inspection of spark plugs goes as follows... oil covered, black, with spotty white corrosion. Also oil in my cool air intake.

Time for new spark plugs. I think I would stay with single electrode copper Bosch plugs, but you have to gap, them.

Allright, went back to the junkyard, grabbed a yellow sticker etm off of my same exact car. Finished putting it in about an hour ago
Same boat; runs superbly but after a few minutes ets light comes on and its crap. No longer accompanied by check engine.

This is a canbus 1999 car. Forget Autel readers (unless it's a DS-708 or 711 or a AL-619 or EU-702) and get a Vida Dice

abscate wrote:We need the codes from the check engine light too. When you get poor running, you can get a bunch of codes, so dont freak if you have a 4 or 5.
Get the actual codes, like P0442, not just the "need sensor" description.
I picked up the bosch1050 bluetooth obd2 and downloaded the app. The only code that came up was p1238, but I cleared the code turned car on and off an BOOM ets light was off. And it ran great! Idle was a bit low though.
So after a nice drive around town I parked removed the obd2 and went for another drive; check engine, abs, and the swervy wheel light came on, so I plugged in the obd2 and got codes p1133, and p1550. Cleared those and took it for another dtive and all was well.
Turned off car, removed obd2, went for another drive and was smooth as silk, except for the fact that my tubo is not engaging at all. And I floored it about 5 times.
Conclusion: I dont know exactly what occurred, pros-its driving well now. No feathering idle. No limp home mode. Cons-no turbo. Slightly low idle.

You can get a boost pressure guage on the display. Choose Add Display from menus.
Also you can log data. Now that you have the device there are a trillion things you can monitor on a live basis while driving.

Well it's years later and here is the update/ solution: I traveled to a shop with the vida/dice system and their analysis proved to NOT be ETM related. It turned out to be the PNP switch. Yes, the one on top of the transmission. Apparently what was happening is my car didn't understand if I was in drive or neutral- presenting me with the driveability issues. Swapped that out for a new one and drove it until I traded it for a 2001 c70. Thank you all for all the help. Regards. Simon.
