Ignition Switch Observations, 98 V70

Post by oki-inu »

I have the ignition switch spinning problem and was looking into the difficulty of doing the replacement myself. The electrical portion is unbelievably easy to remove, take off the plastic housing, remove the connector and two T20 screws. Wish that was my problem.

When I remove the electrical portion and turn the key, it works perfectly - every time. Put the switch back and it spins. Used a screwdriver to turn the electrical portion and it works fine. Put it back, it spins. What's up with that? I can drive the car until I fix the problem by leaving the switch out and starting with a screwdriver.

What's the point of the heavy security on the mechanical side of the switch if I can so easily remove the electrical portion and start the car? Times like this I wish I had a GM. Did I just say that?

Well, you need the key to unlock the steering wheel and when I started the car tonight the key spun again, but only twice. So, I guess the problem IS the mechanical portion. If I do it myself I'll take some pictures or video for YouTube.

My not-so-local Volvo dealer says $161.45 for the coded ignition lock w/o keys. I have to go to the dealer to prepay the order.

I also noticed the contact unit (reel) has 3 crumbled mounts. Since it must come off to replace the lock I will need a new one, $191.89 says the dealer.

Couldn't find an alternate source until I found out it is also called a clockspring and I can order one for $158.31 w/shipping.

Will go the the dealer Friday to order the ignition lock.

Thanks, I just emailed them. I have bought from them in the past and I like their service, didn't think to ask them about these parts since they're not on the site.

Took me a while to get back here but this is what happened.

I got the ignition locked changed. It took a week to get the lock and one false start when I discovered I would need a long T30 socket to get the airbag off. The short socket will not fit and I couldn
