Hi.. My car shifts down hard sometimes,....shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th it slips or hesitate. I was wondering (hoping) if it might be the control solenoid for the transmission.
I found the part (part store) but can not find where it is located on my car.. ?
It would be an inexpensive solution for a first attempt .... What do you guys think, my car has 181,000 miles on it .

It could be a separated B4 servo cap (google it). But in the other post you mention "happen when hot" - that's a call for new/refurbished linear solenoids or, better, the whole valve body.
Engine is I5 (inline 5 cylinders), not L5.
How you've managed to own 1987 850, if production was started in 1991?

Always best to begin with a fluid drain and fill (perhaps two of them for starters) before thinking about repairs.
Check the first two letters of the transmission serial number. If it lies between 1C and 1L the B4 servo cover could be the old design.
The solenoids need to be matched to your valve body depending on the series marked A, B or C

Thanks Mike... Yes I did two drain and fills about six month ago and that helped smooth out things. Now this problem has come up just recently. The picture of the control solenoid on RockAuto's site looks like it is mounted on the trans not inside.. I don't know... So it under a cover then?
Sorry RockAuto.com lists my motor as a L5 and your right it was a 240 my bad

Front cover for valve body is located just in front of the dipstick and is black metal with 9 or so torx 40 bolts securing it.
Not sure what Rockauto lists but be selective on who you get compatability lists for detail parts from. Rockauto wouldn't be one of the more accurate supplier websites.
For solenoid part numbers I would probably just look it all up in Vida (you have this right? ) The 5 small solenoids are all shared but the SLS, SLT & SLU solenoids vary from year to year. The Sonnax catalogue is the best guide for these.
