I bought a C70 2004 in ebay. The seller said in the add that the car was a repo and that the car all it needs is reprogram the key and everything thing else will work as it should. Now Im thinking how would he know if he never had the key for it? The add also said that the engine will turn a couple seconds and then goes off.
Well, I won the car, and of course is nothing like the seller said. The engine turns but no way to start.
So thinking it could be the key I took the car to a Volvo dealer here in Raleigh, NC. The picture shows the diagnostic by the dealer.
Basically they are saying that the computers were change after the car was repo but now there is no way to fix it unless I invest on thousand of dollars.
My question is if anybody knows if there is a way to fix the car.
Maybe changing the computer (which one) or the key from another car??
The car have 100K and I would love to fix it and keep it. Im also trying to get ebay to help me return it, but Im checking possibilities.
Thanks.

Unless you got for an amazingly low price I would use the eBay buyer protection and be done with it.

If you can find someone in your area with VIDA/DICE you can likely figure out which module isn't talking. Even with the immobilizer and the other modules working you are looking at around $400 or so to get a key and a remote bought and programmed for the car and that is one that you really can't do yourself unless you buy a VIDA subscription. Additional keys and remotes aren't usually as expensive if they are purchased and programmed at the same time since that just entails entering the numbers off of their package into VIDA before the software download is applied. It saves on labor but the price of the key and the remote remain the same.
The part of the service ticket that doesn't make any sense is that the charge was $54.50 but that in no way could cover the cost of a cut key, the download, and the labor to program it. I'm not sure that the steps performed were exactly as described.
Push comes to shove, you can buy VIDA/DICE for $120.00 or less (shipped) and have unlimited diagnostic time.

My guess is that the 54 bucks was for the dealer's diagnostic time.
More than likely a half hour min for the mechanics effort.

What doesn't square is that the ticket said that the tech tried to "program the key" but we know that a used key or remote cannot be programmed unless the original sticker for that key or remote was kept with the car. They (the stickers) never even came with the originals when the car was sold.BEJinFbk wrote:My guess is that the 54 bucks was for the dealer's diagnostic time.

My guess is that a new key could be bought and programmed and it would work fine with a software download but the service ticket makes things sound much more daunting and I don't know why unless they didn't want to screw with it.
I must admit that I am a bit out of my element here with an '04 and I really don't know how much it differs from the '99/'00 system. The C70s kept getting the newer P2 style engines and such even though they are a P80 car. I'm guessing the rest of the electronics got similar updated stuff and the P2s are out of my wheelhouse.

Key programming on limited networked P80 chassis is not the same as P1, P2, P3 full network. The code from key package is not used for P80 models.
The tech was able to see codes that directly point to mismatched control units. On that car the Immobilizer (key chip recognition control module) has a conversation with the ECM and codes will set both places for control units not progrmmed to each other. VIDA does not allow blanking and reprogramming the IMMO to ECM.
Xemodex may be able to but I think they can clone info from the original ECM to another ECM but I'm unsure if they can do what is needed here. If they can then stealing cars just got easier........

Thanks for the responses, I can see I didn't explain well the problem.
I bought the car in Ebay from someone in Maryland, Im in NC, so I went there with my truck and a Uhaul.
The seller ad say that the car was a repo and that at the time of the repo the key was deprogrammed.
That all the car need was to get a new key and program it.
So I took the car to the dealer and the service person think the key is new, cause it looks that way, and that the seller probably bought that key only to be able to unlock the steering.
Then when the dealer try to reprogram they couldn't get a connection to the car.
The 54 dollars was for half hour they try to connect. The mechanic then stay working for an extra couple hours for curiosity.
And I paid 1400 for the car, I knew I would have to put some money on it...but not so much as FEW thousand
I will try to find somebody with the VIDA

That doesn't make sense. Is the seller in the repo business or is it someone who bought it from a repo and found they couldn't key it, perhaps? The seller ad say that the car was a repo and that at the time of the repo the key was deprogrammed.
VIDA should be able to tell you which module is wrong , why didn't the dealer tell you this ?

If car cranks but does not start can be because of lost synchronization between immo and ECM.
So ECM reload should be done. But if information is the ECM is wrong dealer won't be able to reprog immo code.
So first ECM should be cleared and then reprogrammed again.

If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer
