Connect your iPod w/ iPod Adapter

Post by Helodrv »

I paid $160 for the JVC KD-HDR1 CD receiver. The JVC KSPD100 iPod Adapter was $30. The Volvo wiring harness was about $15 and the Metra console adapter (the extra cubby) was $15. $220 total. I shopped on ebay and Amazon. The radio was cheaper on Amazon but the iPod adapter was cheaper on ebay.

It took about 20 minutes to uninstall the old unit and put in the JVC, the iPod adapter, and the console adapter. The thing that took the longest time was correctly splicing the wiring adapter. I had to go on the JVC site to confirm some of their wiring colors. If I remember correctly, the dimmer wire was color-coded a little differently. But once all the wires were spliced, wrapped, and tie-wrapped, taking the old unit out and putting in the new was very quick.

Originally, I had the iPod adapter connection running to the coin holder. But after looking at the center console storage unit while I was replacing some of the lights in the heated seat switches, I loosened up the console and pulled the connector into the storage area, cutting a small nick in the side of the removeable plate in the bottom of that area.

What started this whole project was the problem my old head unit had maintaining a signal. Very close stereo stations would not have stereo, just a lot of hissing and crackling in the background. I thought I was having an antennae problem in my wagon. My independent Volvo repairman said it was more than likely the head unit. He said 850 wagons almost never have antennae problems. Then I debated over replacing my old unit with one that had a CD player. But there again, when using the iPod, I would have to deal with an FM modulator. We do that in our CRV. But even with a good modulator, sometimes there is interference. Add to that the iPod is in sight. If you stop to get out of the car, you have to disassemble everything and hide it. So the more I thought about it, the better a new unit sounded. We are just starting to have HD FM stations in our area, so I thought I would give it a whirl. So far, I am very well pleased with the JVC unit. Its price and function are excellent. Now to get to work on those old speakers!

Once the build-out connection for the ipod is complete, can you still use the radio, cd, and tape player at all? It appears as if you plug the ipod adapter into the cd player/changer that you may not have access or use the cd player.

Is that true ?

It depends on the radio. Most of the newer (2005 and later) JVC radios accept either their own input for an MP3 player or an ipod, or an external amp or CD player. The newer ipod adapter also recharges the unit as well as dislaying the ipod directories on the face of the receiver. All the selections can be done from the receiver.

Having said that, the capabilities of the unit are not shut out by using the external connection. My receiver is an HD FM receiver with a CD player built in. The JVC units which also have cassette capabilities do not lose this capability by connecting an ipod either. It just adds another selection in the menu where you choose which part of the component you want to use, FM, AM, ipod, disk, cassette, ect.

I particularly like that the CD player on this unit is capable of reading MP3 and WMA files. It presents them by folder or album. All in all, I think I got a lot of increased capability and great sound by replacing the old unit.
