2006 V70 A/C problems and compressor change help

Post by Pirate99gs »

Not sure if this is a double post, if it is, sorry!

Last week, the A/C stopped blowing cold air. Tests on the system lead to me to believe that my compressor is not compressing. The clutch engages, but does not build any vacuum. So it looks like I will need to change the compressor (crap). I have a few questions that hopefully people can help me with.

1. Do the A/C lines need to come off before the compressor is dropped? I quickly looked at the line's location, and to me there's no way possible to reach the nuts for the lines with the compressor still bolted in.

2. From experience, is there excess wire so the compressor can be unplugged after it is unbolted?

3. The manual says that the subframe does not need to be slightly lowered to drop the compressor. Is this actually a reality?

Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated.

Pieter

You can work the other way:

If you remove PS pump and alternator, you can unbolt the compressor and move it back and forth.

I did a bit more digging into this. The compressor on this car looks like this one:

I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out as to where I would need to put the bread clips. Or am I out of luck and this model can't be shimmed.

My both Volvos have same AC clutch, which can't take bread clips fix.

I recall I had the same issue on my 19999 V70 T5 and un-did and retoqrued the AC lines using about 2 1/2 feet of 3/8 extender - working the wrench all the way over on the driver side wheel.

That repaired AC has been functioning for over 2 years now.
