There is a picture of the module circuit board in this thread.

The capacitors are polarized electrolytic capacitors so you need to pay attention to the polarity when you solder it back in.

Hey guys,
I just picked up a 1998 V70XC with this exact problem [ABS light and TRACS light on, intermittent engine light]. The guy I bought it from said it didn't leak oil and that the ABS light was on, due to a faulty wheel sensor. The former turned out not true..there is a small puddle in my parking space. Do you know for fact if a faulty wheel sensor can set off the ABS light? I am new to Volvo, so please help me understand if there is clear indication that the ABS module has failed or if another component may be suspect.. Based on this thread, I figure I had better locate and inspect the ABS circuit board for a bad solder joint or maybe a loose/failed capacitor.

Without an ABS scan I can't tell you for sure if it is a failed module or a bad wheel sensor. What I can say is that the modules have a 100% failure rate and the wheel sensors rarely fail. There are only two kinds of 1998 Volvo ABS modules - those that have failed or those that are going to fail.
The loose capacitor is a weird one and I think something else might have led to that issue. When the connectors on the module were flow soldered at the factory they didn't preheat the connector pins and the solder never flowed properly between the pins and the PC board which results in "cold" solder joints. The largest pins and hence the worst problems are at the modulator pump but the other pins on the other hooded connector are also subject to failure and those include all of the wheel sensors.
The upshot is that you may actually pull a code for a bad wheel sensor but the sensor is fine and the connector at the module is at fault. You can rebuild the module yourself if you are handy with a soldering iron or you can send it off to Midwest ABS and have a plug and play replacement for not a ton of money.
