1998 v70 Suggested Lubricant For Back Door Latch

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

When i did the hood latches on my car i was able to pour a small amount of oil right onto the latch, because the latch is right inside the engine compartment and when i pour the oil it goes down and hits the latch, which works great.

However, the back door on the wagon (the 5th door way in the back that opens to get to the spare tire) has the latch in the door itself, so when i open the door the latch travels upward over my head, so oiling is a little different because i cant just pour the oil on it like with the hood latches. It really needs it too.

I checked out the oil cans in the local auto parts stores and they dont seem to have very good oil cans. Priced at about 8 dollars, but they dont look like they would work very well, with a really stupid looking spout.
What i need is a good oil can (or other idea) so i can shoot the oil upin there even though a little might drip back down. I used to have one some 30 years ago but it's long gone. It was about 7 inches high and had a stiff steel spout that was about 5 inches long, and believe me, that thing would shoot oil or gas some 20 feet with no problem. I know because i used to shoot wasps in the garage long time ago, and it would down 'em in a heartbeat even from the stairs to the loft, which was a good 20 feet away.

So any ideas on a decent quality oil can with good pressure, or some other way to oil this, or even some type of spray lubricant? I hesitate to use anything on this car without consulting the board here because i know this car is so picky, so i dont want to just grab any kind of spray. An really good oil can would be ok too though.
Please dont suggest Wd40, because that is not made to be a lubricant even though people do suggest that from time to time. I am also not sure of it's use on plastics which this latch has some of.

Thanks a bunch...

That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

3:1 oil comes in an aerosol can but if you put some on a coke spoon you could deliver it upside down.

CRC sells aerosol white lithium grease and I give the hinges a shot with that every 6 months or so. It seems to work fine. The CRC products are at most of the chain auto parts stores.

Hi again,

abscate:
What does a "coke spoon" look like, and what do you mean by an "earring", what would that look like?

Ozark:
I hesitate to use Lithium grease of any kind because a large part of the latch is made from some kind of plastic. From what i read the grease contains some kind of petroleum. Also, it dries up after a while even if it's 2 years, it gets powdery. I've actually seen it dry up too, after a couple years or so.

Coke spoon was a 1980s flashback. No longer available tool in this Era.

Lithium grease is fine. Just respray once a year ( just like Volvo says on the PM schedule)

Hi again,

Oh ok, thanks. So they actually recommend using Lithium grease then? That's very interesting. I already have a can that's been sitting around for 10 years taking up space. Would love to be able to use it. I was worried about the stuff drying up and making it harder to open again. I wonder how hard it is to remove the latch and then oil or grease it and then install it back on?

Removing the rear hatch latch is a bit of a hassle, not too bad but I would never do it just for lube purposes. Basically the cover comes off (hassle, always a few broken plastic bits), then you unhook the latch and fiddle it out.

I also use white lithium grease on that one, because it is easy to spray in there.

Hi,

Oh ok thanks, if you used it for several years than it must work.

Just one more question then...

If you already had a high pressure oil can as well as the spray lithium grease, which would you prefer to use: The high pressure oil can with appropriate oil (that you already have) or the spray lithium grease?
