1998 V70 Runs fine for days, Then cranks but won't start

Post by rtfarnham »

Hello everyone,

Here's my issue.... I have a 98 V70 Wagon with 95k miles. It's been running fantastic for 3 years since I've owned it. However, Recently when going out to start it, it just cranks. It finally started and ran for a day, then did it again. I replaced the coil as there was no spark coming from it. After that it started up and was doing fine for a few days and now the same thing is happening again. Sometimes it will start after a few hours.... sometimes days, now not at all after a week. I started digging deeper and noticed the camshaft sensor wires are completely cut clean after the pigtail! I don't even see the other end of the wires anywhere. I didn't even know it was possible for the car to run without this sensor? Also, before I changed the coil, I did have a battery charger sitting on it overnight from cranking it so much. I was planning on going into the ignition switch until i found the cam sensor wires split.

It would be fantastic if someone could tell me about the sensor, and better yet show me a diagram of where it's wires run to?

Get the cam sensor fixed first.

How old are the ignition parts - spark plugs, cap rotor, spark plug wires - on your car?

Maybe 2 years with the exception of the new coil.... But there's no spark coming from the coil, so the problem would be before the distro, correct?

I've also checked and it's getting plenty of fuel, the timing marks on cams look to be aligned. One other thing that happened lately was the speedo quit working. I read about the control module and it needing to be reflowed at certain points. Could this module also cause a no-start/start/no-start scenario?

Found where the wires go and spliced them back together and taped good..... started right up. I think i'm the victim of foul play as it was a clean cut (not torn). Amazing to me how the vehicle can run off and on without the sensor being used.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, the ECM runs a check of systems at startup as well as monitors ongoing. Sometimes it takes a set number of drive cycles or "events" before it will throw a fault code or shut something down. It seems strange that you did not get a code for the cam sensor. But you may be good to go now that you patched it up.
