1996 Volvo 850 will not accelerate past 30mph
I have a 1996 Volvo 850 that I just had the engine replaced on once I drove it it drove the first time perfectly fine unfortunately due to the snow I had to park it for a bit, when I went to drive it it drove OK for the first 3 miles, after that it started to cough and sputter and not allowing me to reach above 30mph, but once I got it back in the driveway it idles just fine and even accelerates back to normal until I 0ut it into drive again, I have replaced all the plugs wires distributor cap, MAS, the fuel pressure regulator, all the hoses have been checked, the air filter has been changed, the hose to the air filter has been reattached, I'm at a loss as to what could be doing this, and the cat converter has been fixed to when my mechanic thought it was fixed the first time it idled rough and when we drove it not even a mile down the road it backfired, and stuttered and we barley got it back into his driveway so I guess any help at this point, I'm wondering if the throttle could be an issue?? My mechanics had this car 2 months and he has absolutely no idea what could be wrong, thanks in advance!

Do you know the code numbers of the P codes is it posting via OBD-II? I assume that the CEL is on if it runs that poorly.

Look for a clogged intake.
I hate to sound snarky but you need to find another mechanic. Where abouts are you in CT? There's a great place in North Windham

Kars of Putnam. Ken is a stand-up guy
The backfiring is weird as it would lead to a bad timing issue, either electrical or mechanical...but you say the car ran fine right after you did the motor swap

Yeah I'm at a loss I don't know what could be causing it I have gone two months without my car and it's getting to the point where I'm getting fed up and need it looks like Saturday it will be leaving the mechanic sink or swim at this point so I'll definitely check them out is he reasonable??

I had a similar issue with a 96 Volvo 850. It would start and idle ok. I could rev it - no problems at all. However, when I would try to drive it, I could not get above about 30 mph. Long story short, after checking a bunch of stuff a Volvo tech (the guy the Volvo mechanics call when they are stumped) suggested I pull the fuel pump assembly and see if the hose from the pump was connected to the top of the assembly. I pulled the assembly - all looked good. On closer inspection I could see that the black hose from the pump was touching where it was supposed to connect to but it had slipped off. I reconnected it properly (using a better clamp) and reinstalled it. The car has worked perfectly ever since.
I hope this helps! Easy fix - took about 30 minutes.
