Hello everybody!
I'm new here, but not a new Volvo driver! My family has always had Volvos and I really do love them. My daily driver for the past year has been an 04 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. Recently after a trip to Colorado, the transmission began slipping quite badly. As it turns out, the tranny is more or less shot with 159K miles on it. No long trips or hard driving anymore. I really did love the car, but it's time for something different.
Right now, I have two choices. Our local Volvo mechanic has a 1997 850 Turbo Wagon, and an 04 V70 Turbo. I don't know the miles on either of them, but he has said both are in very nice condition. From a cursory Wikipedia comparison, the 97 850 seems to have more power (225 boosted up to 243?). I'm not sure what the power rating on the V70 is a bit confusing, so I'm not entirely sure what it is.
From a purely performance standpoint, which car would you guys choose? From an "amenities" point of view (heated seats, sunroof etc) which would be more "loaded"?

They won't be very similar at all. They may share afew items such as heated mirrors, traction control, dual zone climate, leather and trip computer but that's where the similarity ends.
The 2004 will have auto dimming rearview mirror, electronic child locks, curtain airbags for front as well as rear passengers. Booster seats on rear left and right may be on the 2004. Auto raising and lowering passenger side front glass is also standard on P2s. Steering wheel audio controls are also standard on P2s. The braking system would have numerous upgrades in the 2004. Options that the 2004 may have fitted that the 850 can't have are cargo 12V power and power retractable mirrors.
The rest depends on optioning such as sunroof, trick alloys, metallic paint etc
Power wise with the 2004 you need to check the engine number. If it's a high pressure turbo it will have a B5234 engine model and a T5 badge. Power is likely over 175KW 234hp
If it's a low pressure model it will have a B5254T and will have around 153KW or 205hp
Handling and stability is far superior in the V70 due to a far wider track and newer design. The 850 is a 1992 design and even though it was a benchmark for a medium wagon in its day the V70 is streets ahead.
