Hey guys, going to tackle a very noisy spring seat issue that I have and want to make sure I have all the pieces I might need to replace while I'm in there. The car has 235k on it with newer Bilstein tourings, but unknown condition of any other components. Attached is the cart I have going at FCP...let me know if/what you think I'd need to add (I'm going to do both sides).
So far I have the XC90 seats, new bearings, strut bump stops (so expensive for foam!), new strut to knuckle bolts/nuts (I think), and upper strut to body nuts. I figured everything else I could re-use?
Thanks guys!

The IPD new HD seats looks better than the XC90 seat. I would buy that instead.

You need a new ball joint nut and bolt too. Volvo would not sell them to me without a balljoint, so I used a Grade 8 14mm (??) bolt nut.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why does he need to disconnect the ball joints? I've only done that when replacing control arms. Looks like the OP has everything he needs.abscate wrote:You need a new ball joint nut and bolt too. Volvo would not sell them to me without a balljoint, so I used a Grade 8 14mm (??) bolt nut.

I don't replace any of the hardware (nuts and bolts) unless I know it is bad. Agreed with dos, definitely not the ball joint nut, wouldn't even consider it unless you are for some reason replacing the control arms too.
I'd get new dust boots to go with those bump stops, otherwise you are good to go.

Do you guys do the seats with the strut on the car or take off the strut and control arm?
I thought taking the strut off the ball joint would be easiest

I would add the bump stops. On all of mine the bump stops (which holds the bellows) pretty much turned to dust when I took things apart. Twice bitten by that I just include them when I'm doing anything strut related.

He's got bump stops already, they are hiding down on the bottom of the list.
For spring seats the strut tower comes out, this does not involve any of the control arm fasteners:
- remove nut that attaches sway bar end link to strut, disengage end link
- remove ABS cable from strut
- use a jack e.g. to support steering knuckle from bottom, at the control arm ball joint (optional)
- remove 2 large nuts-bolts at the strut-to-steering knuckle, 3 small nuts at the top of the tower
- remove tower out the bottom, on to coil spring compressor steps etc.

What Erik said--whole strut assembly comes out disconnected at the steering knuckle. And place a folded rag over the CV boot to protect it (tip per cn90). Oil up the threads on your spring compressor and use an air impact with a 6" extension on the socket. What used to be an ordeal is cake when you have the right tools.

Great, thanks guys! I would typically reuse hardware if I could but with living in Ohio and sketchy parts availability at the local dealer I didn't want to take a chance if I broke something. I'll check out the dust boots as well.
