''2001 Cross Country or 2001 V70''
Good day all. I just found you guys on line. Looks like a great site. Getting ready to retire my wifes 88 760 GLE. Looking at a 2001 V70 and a 2001 V70 Cross Country. Any advise or more importantly a heads up on problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I and many others will advise you to either wait 6 months or ante up now with a few more dollars and get a 2002.hoops34a wrote:Good day all. I just found you guys on line. Looks like a great site. 2001's are VERY problematic. Most have failing or failed transmissions and a HOST of other 1st year problems.
I sell these and won't buy an 01 anymore unless the service and history are over documented, it has a new transmission and a host of other (new) parts.
They got a whole lot better in 2002 (and newer)
Bottom line, most 01's are total junk.
I bought my used '01 V70 at 42k, and the only thing I have had to fix/replace have been shocks and the ABS module $650(I've heard you can fix this yourself). I'm at 59k now, and nothing serious yet. Let me just say that every time I go to the dealer to have my car serviced, vast majority on the lifts are the xc models 90 and 70 regardless of year. I don't know why, but that's my personal experience. I would have to say that if the car runs well and has been run-up on the mileage, the previous owners must have fixed the problems already (or are really good at covering existing problems up) in order to put those miles onto the car. I love my 01 v70, and I hope this helps.
2001 V70T5 White Exterior/Taupe,Oak Interior, 18" Pegs, Bilstein HD, USA-Spec, volvo coolbox, tint and Xtant 1700watt sub, Blaupunkt components, Kenwood Amp.

Trust me on this one.
If you don't believe me, ask a dealer about 2001's.
Out of the 10 or so 01's I've bought and sold in the past year, 6 have had several major problems.
These were vehicles with over 60K mles

Went to the site you sent. Good reading. I have my eye on a 2002 V70 also. Is this one a reliable car? Consumer reports say it is a good car and they do not like the 2001 XC and 2001 V70. Thanks for all of your opinions and advice.

02's are decent cars if the services have been performed.
With any Volvo over 40K miles, look at the service book to see if they have been performed or ask for service receipts
Yes, 2002 V70 is a much better car. On my '02 V70 in the last year I have only replaced a few items. First was the dreaded ETM failure (covered by Volvo), power seat that only works when vehicle is not driven, rear shocks, front struts and bearings, sway bar links, rear hatch that only I can get open.
My Toyota is feeling neglected. All I do on her is change the oil and put in gas.
The term "good Volvo" is an oxymoron.

I'm feeling parinoid. I do not want to make payments and have expensive repairs also. That sucks. I wanted a wagon so my wife could put in the kids hockey bags and such. Any one have a opinion on a reliable Volvo that one can do the regular maintenace and have the ''Volvo'' reliability? Thanks in advance.

They got expedentially better year after year so the newest you can afford will provice you THAT much better a vehicle.
It's also the luck of the draw.
Unlike most vehicles you can have two Volvos, same year, same mileage, both having the same service history.
One will be mostly trouble free and one will be a POS, that's just the way it unfortunately is.
I sell these (feel free to contact me) as I always try to buy what I think is a good one.
Once in a while I get fooled and I re-wholesale it, but most of the time they're good ones
