If the shaft play is OK then the only other thing that commonly fails is the diaphragm on the compressor bypass valve. To test it use a vacuum gauge and draw a couple of pounds of vacuum and see if it holds. If the vacuum bleeds off then the diaphragm has ruptured. The waste gate valve can leak as well but that leak is fairly rare.
The hard plastic lines are usually the PCV lines and they do get quite brittle. This is a dandy time to service the PCV completely.

I'll get the vacuum test done on the CBV; I'm sure my mechanic friend has the tools/gauges. If the turbocharger fan shaft play is acceptable I'm going to leave it be.
Yeah, since I have this thing completely apart lots of tubes and hoses will get replaced, including the PCV system. The rubber coolant inlet hose to the turbo has developed a serious aneurysm. I'm sure it's some aftermarket tubing someone used just to get it out the door.

Do you have access to the cam cover locking tools? Sounds like you may be covered with the friend's shop but if not send me a PM, I could do a loaner, I may be fairly close by.bugs11 wrote:... After reading and watching numerous treatises/videos online regarding removing the valve cover I've decided to go with the "lock cams to the valve cover" method of valve cover removal. ...

Not the Volvo kit. He has something that just locks the cam sprockets in place for doing a timing belt replacement. My plan was to use that to lock the front cam sprockets in time plus wrap with wire or zip ties to keep the sprockets in together - so they won't pull apart and wire to the cover. For the back ends of the cams I'm planning on doing the TracyTrueSoaps board with slots and scrap flat stock homemade jig.erikv11 wrote:Do you have access to the cam cover locking tools? I'm in I.C. Having proper cam locking tools would be great.

I recommend some quality valve seals...the ones that came in the kit I bought back in '06 sucked. They began leaking again within a year. If I ever do them again, I'll stick with factory Volvo even though they are significantly more expensive.
Too bad you're not in New England. I have the head removal kit with the cam tools

Checked out the 15G turbocharger shaft for in-out and side to side today, didn't feel any movement in any direction so I'm just going to clean the gunk off it the best I can and call it good. Still need to vacuum test CBV though.
Finally had the time to get the cam cover and head off this past weekend. Looks like head gasket was leaking into #2 cylinder. There's some crud on the cylinder walls of #2. The head is at the machine shop. The machine shop ordered a Fel-Pro Head Gasket Kit. I'm assuming Fel-Pro is a decent quality kit. I'm told this machine shop does good work.
One of these days I'm going to upload a bunch of pictures.
I'll order the injector seals, spark plugs, PCV kit, Timing Belt parts, etc... from FCPEuro. Anything else I should be looking at since I have this thing tore apart? Vacuum lines maybe?

Vacuum lines for sure. Generic rubber works great, silicone no better no worse but a little easier to work with.
