2000 Volvo V70XC AWD producing white smoke exhaust

Post by jillbucher »

Hi, I have a 2000 Volvo V70XC AWD with 87K miles that started releasing white smoke from the exhaust pipe last night. At the time, it smelled more like smoke and lingered around my car, but this morning when I turned it on it smelled sweet and appeared to be more like steam. This symptom seems to suggest, from my research, that it could mean that coolant is getting into the engine. It doesn't seem like I'm losing coolant (with the engine cold, it is at the maximum line), but my oil level is low (hitting the last X on the dipstick). The car did not overheat and no warning lights have illuminated on the dash. Should I assume that I blew a head gasket? Other possibilities?

I don't know if this could be related to recent repairs or not but I will list those, just in case. One month ago, I had my timing belt, camshaft and crankshaft seals replaced, water pump, and coolant container replaced. (There were some issues after this work was done, as the CEL kept throwing P0014 - the mechanic eventually found that something (the cam?) was off a notch). Nine months ago, I replaced the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors and had the transmission completely resealed.

Has anyone else had such problems with their Volvo? I've spent $5500 on repairs so far in 9 months and I feel like it won't end. Considering I drive about 5K miles a year, it doesn't really seem worth it to keep, but I keep putting more money into it. Surely there are other things that could go wrong, but are there other major repairs that commonly occur with this vehicle around the 90K mile mark?
