Spare Key Code

Post by yemi »

I have a Volvo S40 1998 model in perfect condition. I misplaced it's key recently. I have my spare key and tried using it but could not start the Car. I took it to the Garage and i was told it needs a "CODE" They have tried contacting Volvo but for the past three weeks to a month they are expecting a feedback whereas i am paying by the day!

Can anyone help me out? I need my car ASAP!

thank you

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Where are you from, as the S40 was not produced in the US until 2000?

This is an excerpt from the owner's manual for the US 2000 S/V40:
Each of the keys supplied with your car is electronically coded. When the key is inserted into the igniton switch, the code is transmitted to and compared with a code stored in the start inhibitor module. The car can only be started if a properly coded key is used.

If you misplace a key, take the other keys to an authorized Volvo retailer. The existing code in the start inhibitor module and all the keys will be erased as an antitheft measure and a new code will be programmed in.
I assume this is your problem. The garage, unless a Volvo dealer, cannot programme the key.

I suggest you get your key and go to the nearest Volvo dealer, with lots of money of course, because they have the only solution. Also take the Vehicle Identification Number as they may need this.

Bill.
