Re: MVS posting standards: Correct English, no text talk ple

^ bingo.

IMHO is a widely-used abbreviation on the English-speaking Web. This is an English-speaking board... so it's fine. Contractions are fine.

Texting-speak can easily be confused with actual parts, like "b4"... a servo? Or "before"?

Humor is important to keep things light. :-)

I'm in a fairly technical field, and I try to follow a practice of not using an AWOD with out defining it like this.

Oooppps. acronym without definition (AWOD)
attempts at creative writing, sometimes known as humor, frowned upon in a strictly technical forum?

Hi there.

Maybe it is not really related to correct use of the English language, but it is related to language.
So I thought I just post it here. :)
The more posts I read here, the more I see you (mostly americans I guess) really really love to use abbreviations.
Now I can't speak about the rest of europe, but in this country, The Netherlands, we do not do that. We just use the whole word for it. Everytime. For me, the abbreviations are the same as using text talk. ;)

You use no abbreviations in English in the Netherlands, or in Dutch in the Netherlands?

Hahaha :-) alstublieft or alsjeblieft is just an official word for please Or there you go.
No maybe i was not clear. I meant for car parts. Or car repairs.
Like the pvc repair. A ptc valve. Iac valve. Etm. Evap. maf.
i cant think of more just of the top of my head.
And not that it is a problem for me. no definitely not.
i just never heard people use so many abbreviations everyone just seems to know.
We just call the animal by its name here.
Even in english i would not have thought to shorten car part names.
;-)

It is easy to understand why someone from a culture that allows words like Kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamheden to creep into the language, would fail to appreciate the use of abbreviations. The Dutch, like the Germans are fond of cramming little words together to make ever larger words. It is frequently carried to the extreme with wild abandon and seems to be a badge of honor to build even larger ones. To their credit, the Germans have recently begun to show some restraint and have officially retired the 63 letter word Rindfleischetikettierungsuberwachungsaufgabenubertragungsgesetz .

I've heard it said that "Americans should be more like europeans". To this I say, "Hogwash!" and point to the apparent disregard for abbreviations as a strong argument to the contrary.

:)

I apologize for my lack of capitals in a prior post. I have had to use a cell until recently. I not only have "fat finger syndrome" but also RA.
Now that I have my laptop up and running again, I hope I can remember to use "Correct English" proper grammar, and remember my OCD about misspelled words (mine)
whatever happens will be...
