2001 v70 xc been sitting for 5 years running rough
Hi guys; I bought a 2001 v70 xc this weekend that had been sitting for five years. It was probably a mistake but I thought I would roll the dice because it was a great deal. The main issue I am having is it runs kind of rough and seems like there is no boost at all from the turbo; very sluggish acceleration and the closer I get to redline the more it struggles to raise rpms. I tried swapping out the tcv and map sensors off of my 02 v70 t5 (assuming that they are interchangeable) and it didn't seem to help. I unplugged the maf sensor and it would start and run for a second but then stumble and die. I am leaning towards a clogged catalytic converter but I would like to have some knowlegable opinions from you guys. Could it be a problem with the turbo itself? Also I might add that the lady I bought it off of told me that it was running fine when she parked it and I have no reason to not believe her, thanks!

Try to use up most of the gas, then add some Chevron and a nice full tank of high test before we do anything about that sulfer smell. The probably used Shell gas 5 years ago, now you have Mobil

The car was bone dry when I bought it so it has fresh gas in it now. The tranny leaves a lot to be desired; I flushed it and it helped but I think I have some sticking solenoid issues still. There are service/ check engine light on but autozones code reader only picked up transmission codes. This car has newer engine in it, a 2.5, but I have no idea what year it is or the mileage. Thanks for the reply!

I note your comment that the fuel tank was 'bone dry'.
You may have some debris from the tank mixed with your fresh fuel along with a clogged fuel filter?
Perhaps the throttle body could o with a clean also?

I will try a fuel filter next to see if that helps. I tried removing the catalytic converter and it runs about the same; maybe worse. I will check the plugs and coil packs too but it just doesn't seem like that's the problem. Thanks for the input!

I'm guessing it sat for five years for a reason.
Pull the plugs and do a compression test to discover the reason.
Coil packs are a good suspect but the plugs will tell you that.
In 5 years, cylinder walks and piston rings rust and stick and all sorts of bad stuff..
How many miles are on the beast?

It has 129000 miles on it. The woman I bought it off of seemed pretty genuine on the fact that it didn't have any problems when she parked it; but I have thought the same thing. I replaced the fuel filter and it's still not any better. I haven't been able to work on it for a few weeks but the next thing I am going to check out is the turbo to see if it spins freely or not. thanks for any ideas!

Have you tried a simple 'glove test' over the oil filler opening as a means of checking the PCV system.
Maybe there is excessive positive crankcase pressure choking the engine?
I wonder also if a good longish highway run might get it running smoother once it gets at a good hot running temperature. (blow out the cobwebs)
Not a wise idea unless your confident it won't die on you part way thus incurring expensive tow fees.

Fuel that stays for long time in the fuel injectors can restrict them; the camshaft timing actuators also may get stuck but it's an easy check. maybe check the exhaust as a rodent might had it confused with a luxury resort
