Well about a year has gone by and the new, Volvo rear pads are down to about 1/16" with even wear. The odometer is broken on the car but I'd guess that he put 30K miles on it, not really sure.
I'd like some pads that will last longer and we'd like to finish tonight.
We have an advance auto parts close by, the pads that look reasonable to me are:
Edit: These are also ship to home so are out: PBR Ceramic for about $40 bucks
Carquest Wearever Platinum Ceramic for $37
Edit: These are ship to home only so they are out: Beck/Arnley $40
They have Textar and World Brake brands but I've never hear of them.
Anyone have a feeling for which of the above would last the longest?
Thanks for all the help you all have been great!
If we wait and do it later in the week I could get Brembo from FCP which I'd like to
try and see if we get a bit more mileage from them.
We also did the rear shock mounts today, took probably 5 times longer than it should have
due to having to go slowly on all the rusty frozen bolts.

I'm another CT Volvo Dude that fights the rust. I feel your pain! Just did shocks & struts this past weekend
I got great mileage out of Mintex pads and Brembo rotors, both front and rear. Almost 80k miles. I do very little stop and go city type driving

Thanks Russ, never tried Mintex pads - where are you in CT, we're in Trumbull.
We've decided to do them later this week and get the pads from FCP Euro.
Are the Brembo Ceramics longer lasting than the Volvo pads?
Edit: I decided against the Ceramics because of fade, and went with NAPA Premiums all
around which are semi-metallic like the OEM. We used them in the front last time and I
thought why not try them on the rear. We've still not pulled the fronts to see how they are
wearing.

Did the pads on the passenger side without removing the caliper or rotor but we're unable to find the parking brake adjuster with a screw driver. Is the hole positioned up on both sides? With it at the top we can feel and hear the spring, feel what seems to be a round adjuster but don't feel any teeth to catch - strange because we did it last time.
Is the procedure covered with details online somewhere?
Edit: OK we looked in with a flash light and found it, a bit off center from the top, works fine.

Thanks, link doesn't seem to work but I think I'll find it with the 1999, V70 and parking brake.
Odd think here, rear driver's side pads were down to about 1/16" of material, passenger side seemed to have more rust but had about 1/8" and 3/16" on the pads - we think that they froze or did not have as much pressure due to rust friction.
I was expecting the fronts to be in really bad shape only to find that they had at least 1/4" and all looked very good up front.
The only thing that I can think of is that the proportioning valve is not working and that one side froze due to the rust. My son says that during serious panic stops the ABS light comes on. I tried a panic stop from about 50 MPH and one wheel seemed to lock up, before we did the new pads. Probably the driver's rear side.
Front pads were NAPA Premium and I'm very impressed with the minimal wear.
New rear pads are also NAPA Premium so we'll see how they do.
Is it common to have proportioning valve problems?
This is a wagon, so perhaps the better weight distribution puts more work on the rears.

Fixed link, sorry about that
I would point finger at rust on calipers before proportioning valve trouble,
In the Northeast, I figure on new calipers every 5 years or so due to water salt grit and locusts

They were "new" rebuilt calipers and I seem to recall them being ATE so not a cheap copy.
They are just one year old and gone through one winter.
The NAPA pads seem to have a bit more clearance and do not bind up as easily as the Volvo pads.
I'm hoping that this helps to keep things freed up.
Rear brake issues are a serious pain in the butt, I had a Ford Probe GT (really a Mazda underneath)
and they also had problems with rust and freezing up. It was a design issue and well known among
owners.
